I think a lot of people don't realize that the director died in full production, leaving another director to take over. It is therefore logical that the film is not as strong as usual at times. In addition, Louis de Funés already had heart problems, so he had to take it easy and you notice that. Still, I think this film more than succeeded in its design. During the shooting he turned 68, and there is still almost twenty years between the first Gendarme print and the last. It is a pity that his life came to an abrupt end shortly after the recordings. Of course I haven't seen all his films, but of the fifteen films that I have seen, this series is an absolute star. I don't think it's the worst of the series either, it's just different. 4 stars is well deserved.

Le Gendarme et les Gendarmettes has a bad reputation for being a very scary, sexist and racist film. Needless to say, I expected this to become my favorite Gendarme film. Unfortunately, that promise was not fulfilled, although I am less strict about the film than many others. I must admit that certain moments made me slightly uncomfortable, especially how those grotesque gendarmes were beaming about the female beauty I actually found just as distasteful as Deliverance. This is followed by an extensive jungle fantasy by De Funes about 'Yo Macumba'. The spectators in Cinema Palace didn't give a damn. The humor in this Gendarme series is sometimes really toe-curling, not because it would be 'wrong' or something like that, but because it would be old-fashioned and stale that it makes the contemporary viewer uncomfortable. Kind of the equivalent of an embarrassing older relative hoping to have some fun. As a child I was always afraid of 'soeur Clotilde' and that has not changed over the years. What a ridiculous appearance. On the other hand, what I really like about this series is how the French rules of politeness are ridiculed. The game of giving orders vs. doing obediently opens up possibilities for perpetual skits - which, on the other hand, wouldn't even get boring, as long as we can rely on the monstrous grimaces of De Funes and Galabru. What a total lack of trepidation about making themselves ugly; Juliette Binoche could learn something from that. Plus, they both look pretty badass in this movie, like they could succumb at any moment. Eating camembert and drinking wine for decades naturally takes its toll. After all these years I'm still not convinced whether I find De Funes insufferable or genius. Still, only a few films at Cinema Palace to catch!

Another French movie and it's this one. Well, the film did look away quickly, but it is a bit dated in 2022. The film now comes across as a bit sexist and racist. The clue was also a bit simple. Now, of course, the movie comes from a different time period, so I'll condone it.

Furthermore, the familiar elements were back in it.
