After the unexpected death of Pope [Bruno Novelli], Dean Thomas Lawrence [Ralph Fiennes] must ensure that the election of a successor proceeds in an orderly manner and in accordance with Roman Catholic traditions. As long as no one receives a majority of the votes, new elections are held daily. The first round of voting indicates four favorites. The conservative Tedesco [Sergio Castellitto] would be the first Italian Pope in 40 years, Adeyemi [Lucian Msamati] the first Pope from the African continent since Gelasius I (492-496) and Tremblay [John Lithgow] and Bellini [Stanley Tucci] are also among the favorites. Lawrence [Ralph Fiennes] and newcomer Benitez [Carlos Diehz] have received enough votes to proceed to the second round of voting. As the conclave progresses, Lawrence begins to doubt the legitimacy of the conclave. He is faced with a major dilemma when it turns out that he can only gain certainty by breaking with sacred traditions. A static presentation that relies heavily on dialogue and lends itself better to a play. The excellent cast keeps the attention and cameraman Stéphane Fontaine does what he can to keep it visually interesting. The denouement is surprising, although that is not immediately a recommendation.

The most fascinating aspects (and I have no idea whether they already came from the book) are the contrast of this classic concept but then present in modern times. Cardinals looking at their phones, the modern canteen, a cardinal who offers coffee but simply uses an espresso machine, the shuttle buses from hotel to conclave. Also as a political spectacle and what happens in the back rooms is fascinating. And Fiennes is very strong and knows how to take you along as a viewer in his feelings and thoughts. The film remains fascinating. Furthermore, the strong sound design is particularly striking, whether that is the music that comes in penetratingly or the sounds in the halls, the echo in that large hall, the noise in the background.

All very positive to say, but in the end the film was a bit disappointing. Some things are too artificial, all those twists did little for me and the ending is also a bit of a bummer that is quite predictable from the moment the Kabul cardinal makes his entrance. You know: something is going to happen with this. He could well score big. The cardinals are also presented a bit too much as examples for their movements and the inherently fascinating politics (conservative or progressive?) are therefore not entirely convincing. It becomes really strange when one of the cardinals suddenly starts fulminating against Muslims. That really came out of nowhere.

In short, enough interesting things to see and especially to hear, but with a moderate overarching story. 3.0*

My god what an overrated movie. Normally I would say the book is probably better, but with this enormously far-fetched story I can't imagine that either.

It all starts off quite well at first, with a kind of political House of Cards in the Vatican. Although the various movements and interests are all rather obvious.

But halfway through, it seems like everyone has some kind of triple agenda with bad intentions, come on. And I haven't even gotten to those nonsensical attacks and to top it all off, the reveal of the double gender pope hahahaha, come oooon.
A real case of artificiality that I haven't seen in a long time. Ugh.
