Final Destination 2 plot

"For every beginning there is an end."

On the way to Daytona Beach, Kimberly suddenly has a vision of a major accident that will happen on the highway in which she will die with her friends. She immediately stops the car. Moments later, a truck loses its load, causing a massive pile-up. Thanks to this view of the future, Kimberly was able to save herself and her friends' lives, thus avoiding 'death'. As far as I'm concerned, a follow-up film that does better than the first film. While the first film was still a bit searching for the tone, here director David R. Ellis clearly goes for clumsy, nicely over the top and not too serious. Very little time is spent to make scenes really exciting, we know that things go wrong, but we are especially curious how badly things go wrong. While the plane crash at the beginning of the first film was still quite spectacular, the opening of Final Destination 2 is really a few shovels on top of it. That pileup is probably one of the best car crashes ever filmed. And even if the tone in that scene is not yet completely humorous, even there we already see quite a few nice and rude scenes. And we're still just in the opening scene.

Then Ellis always blows through the story. Often literally and figuratively. Because everything - and everyone - can explode, as he proves here. Of course there are also moments in this film when the main characters have to puzzle with each other and think about how things work - with another visit to an anything-but-concrete Tony Todd - but a large part of Final Destination 2 is spent of characters - or rather just characters - who come to their end in completely over the top ways. The small moments that the film wants to do something too dramatic, as if we really care about the main character Kimberly and the somewhat charismatic cop Burke, are a bit counter-productive, but fortunately not too much time goes into that either. Most of the time goes to funny characters who explode. No, it's not high-end cinema, but damn, it's entertaining.

3.5 stars.

Less than 1.

But still a great horror film with a lot of bloodshed. Too bad the bloodshed actually takes up the funniest parts of the film. The accident during the opening is certainly a memorable part, but those scenes remain the best scenes of this series.

The kills in between are also nice and over-the-top and bloody. You can also call them original, especially since it is not a person who gives the grace kick. Everyone flies apart easily, but this should certainly not spoil the fun. Build up to a few kills could have been a little better, but when the kills themselves come it's right on target.

The point is that the "accidents" actually take up the funniest parts of the movie, as they often do during a horror movie. Everything in between consists of boring conversations, boring plot and a boring mystery surrounding it. I didn't really care who was going on now, as long as someone was going on. During the first half of the film it drags just a bit too much, which made telling the time sometimes attractive.

Visually it looks nice. Pretty rude at times, especially with the multiple explosions during the opening. The blood also splashes around in a rather clumsy way, but it works. This series is known for it, and Ellis seemed to understand that he had to get over the previous film, and he does it quite well.

The first movie was just better in terms of plot, this is just a repetition of moves with other murders and other characters. In that respect, this film doesn't feel really original or refreshing anymore, but the film can be forgiven for that during the murders themselves. During the mystery, they just can't be forgiven. Entertaining and rude horror, but that's where it ends.

And straight on with part 2 where the characters of the first FD have largely been cleaned up and a fresh batch is started.

The concept with the so-called vision of what is to come with the usual intervention as a result is now well known. The empty-headed behavior and talk of the followed group at first is appalling, let's say dramatic cliché and flat, you almost want the accident to actually happen because what a retarded people. Also immediately painful about this part 2 is the excess of the pile-up, it couldn't be crazier and more idiotic, and apparently the average American car is not equipped with a brake because everything keeps going full throttle even if the pile up has already started . It is immediately clear to me that this part is less.

Fortunately, the film stabilizes somewhat with the usual search for answers and of course there is the usual series of special and life-demanding incidents that are all a bit more far-fetched than in part 1 the original is gone so you can only try to surpass that. Something that always comes at the expense of quality. At one point, such as with that barbed wire and the entrapment in the car, it's really no longer horror shocking or something, but rather humorous and I have to laugh about it. The leading lady in this case is nice AJ Cook and I never mind watching Ali Larter.

It is obvious that FD 2 is still quite entertaining at times, but it is all a lot less than the first. The originality is gone and then it quickly becomes a repetition of moves.
