Entertaining and fun, especially after two hours of hacking and sawing on the PC with, how could it be otherwise, Left for dead 2, completely kept in style for an evening. And what struck us were the parallels with the game in terms of events, characters, weapons and environments. What came first? This movie or The left 4 dead series?

Back to the movies. The whole and the characters don't get much introduction. The cover falls as suddenly as a bomb and then it quickly becomes a chain reaction of events and gory incidents. The film should not be limited by depth, dialogue and story. It's all pretty standard and on autopilot and beyond there's a lot of those things I think; don't do that now, check each other better, sometimes so much easygoing in a hostile enviroment. Check each other for bites, don't let someone go on patrol alone, get more and better weapons, don't leave that guy alone with his pregnant wife, the ignorant discussion of how to handle/lock up an 'infected'. Well those are the things I think....hmmmm....but not at the expense of the film.

All in all, just an entertaining movie. The atmosphere and unmistakable style of Snyder is fine, the actors do their best. Great soundtrack including Disturbed and a lot of bloody violence. Sit down, relax and enjoy. Nothing more and nothing less. And not bad to be locked up with Sarah Polley, Lindy Booth and Kim Poirier. Even if not a zombie you can take a bite of that.

One thing though, I had seen it before and I thought the film had a much more gloomy atmosphere but I didn't recognize that at all. Also thought a scene at the end that the zombies had been 'conquered' and that the still living were being lifted upside down in the trees. Which movie is that then? Is that Romero's version?

The ten-minute opening scene is unparalleled and really fantastically exciting filmed. Everyone knows what's going to happen in a zombie movie, so Snyder decides to hit the gas right away. After that, some characters soon end up in the mall, where they basically stay stuck for most of the movie. In terms of location, therefore, a bit monotonous, and the momentum also disappears now and then, but in general there was a very pleasant pace in the film, with a catastrophic event every now and then. The group of characters is a bit too big but does contain some nice figures and actors. Funny to see the funky Ty Burrell playing an asshole here. There is also no withholding in terms of blood and gore; there are quite a few brutal and greasy bits in it. Especially that birth scene and the zombie baby is fucked. Unfortunately, you can't count the ultra-stupid decisions the characters make in the last half hour on two hands, but bon, disturb as little as possible. But sometimes it gets really stupid.

In terms of speed, gore/effects, action and some exciting sequences, it is more than a must in Snyder's Dawn of the Dead. I've never seen the original film, so I don't know if this is a real remake or more of my own interpretation, but as a debut film, of course, this is just pretty cool. The bright, artificial use of color sometimes diminishes the atmosphere, and oh yeah, those end credits scenes are really too edgy , combined with The Disturbed's Down with the Sickness, lol, but overall this entertaining zombie film deserves a 3.5*.

Zombies in a shopping mall, that immediately reminds me of the video game Dead Rising. Fortunately, there is also some humor in this film. The combination of horror and humor often works very well, just think of The Cabine in the Woods, Dead Snow, Zombieland and recently Yummy. This debut by Zac Snyder is not only the best film he's made, it's also the only film by the man I like. And besides some humor there is also tension in it. For example, the opening scene is very memorable, which features Johnny Cash's song The Man Comes Around during the opening credits. During the rest of the film this high level is not always maintained, but in general the momentum is there. This debut isn't very original, of course, so it's a remake. The story is not innovative and the highly saturated colors are sometimes too much. At the end of the film (after the escape with the vans) you still get to see some hyperactive camera work, which is so typical of this horror genre. And why do those zombies run so fast in modern zombie movies? But for an evening of innocent entertainment, this film is more than adequate. Even after a second viewing!
