Nice!

But don't pay too much attention to the quotes on the poster above. If the film lacks something to really go through life as a masterpiece, it is a little extra sharpness and extra darkness. It's a good black comedy, that's for sure, but all in all it's just a bit too good.

Not because of the characters, that combination is very interesting. An effectively numb character and a rather dowdy character with a dark side, that combination works very well. Especially when in the same house there is an annoying stepfather, a character that is very easy to hate.

The sequel is easy to guess, the film does not deviate from the expected line that much. There it could have been just that little bit more. But the implementation is certainly correct. Nice in terms of styling, a bit classic with a refreshed smell, nice and dry and just very sleek.

90 minutes fly by in no time, the designation drama/thriller above is crazy (but I'd rather not get into that discussion with the crew) and Finley bombards himself as a talent for the future. But then the accelerator pedal can be pressed just a little more as far as I'm concerned.

3.5*

Meh....in the end no more than a mediocre film. Despite very fine performances by Yelchin, Cooke and Taylor-Joy. And the last two are among the tastiest actresses of their generation, so certainly not a punishment to watch. But where the film tries to be smart and ingenious, it falls flat on the nose and quite a bit. The ending is therefore particularly disappointing. It's as if the screenwriter wanted to give it a twist but really didn't feel like it anymore. Easily rushed.

I think what has been mentioned above, that it is not so easy to explain, is not a strength but a weakness. The film sometimes seems as bored as the spoiled girls and can't decide what it wants to be: black comedy, cynical commentary on society, drama, coming of age... it's meat still fish. It would have been absolutely nothing with lesser actors. Problem with the story is that the stepfather really only gives 1 reason to really hate him: he is a stepfather. Still a bit cheesy.

The first half of the film is the most intriguing, as you can't get enough of Cooke and her relationship with Taylor-Joy. After that it sinks in because of the instability of Taylor-Joy, who can't make a decision.

I love alternative teen movies like Ghost World, but recent mediocre titles like Ladybird and these Thoroughbreds remind me how rare the good ones really are. It's a pity.

Mediocre thriller - if you can call it a thriller at all - that kept me going especially by the always graceful Anya Taylor-Joy. Not that she performed her best role here, but her appearance is always remarkable. Two unstable psychotic women who come up with a plan to kill someone. At first it remains with some toughness, but the words soon gain further meaning through deeds.

The why is somewhat unclear. Not that the father is a great person, but to kill him for that reason? Boredom, the kick, ... maybe it's more in that corner together with the cocktail of madness.

A movie like dime a dozen. Not good good, but not bad either. Perhaps the cat-and-mouse game, the nefarious plan, deserved a little better execution. It all seemed a little too easy. All in all, entertaining enough to give it three stars.
