Not very uplifting drama about two wandering souls who find mutual understanding when they meet by chance in Columbus, Indiana. Jin [John Cho] has come here to say goodbye to his father and Casey [Haley Lu Richardson] is faced with a heartbreaking choice: will she leave Columbus to pursue her dream career, or will she continue to care for her mother, who thanks to Casey her drug addiction has been kicked. A lot of dialogue between two characters wallowing in self-pity. Richardson's lived-in performance provides a few good moments, but otherwise this is quite dull.

This movie didn't convince me at all. At least not in terms of content. It doesn't go much further than some chatting between two people who would rather not stay in Columbus. The banter eventually gives way to a bit more depth in the dialogue, but for me the strength of the film lay elsewhere.

The architecture and the explanation about it interested me a little more. But what really struck me was Kogonada's fine cinematography. The quietly flowing atmosphere was spot on. The acting was also more than solid. The chemistry between the two was certainly there.

Technically strong, just not enough in terms of content to fully engage me...

I recently saw After Yang, director Kogonada's 2nd film, and suddenly this Columbus (his debut film) caught my eye. A wonderful slow film between two characters who happen to get to know each other's path and unconsciously connect with each other and liberate each other spiritually. I was reminded of Lost in Translation, but Kogonada is said to be mainly inspired by Yasujiro Ozu, which I can follow.

In the leading roles we see John Cho, whom I know more by face than by his acting. Haley Hu Lichardson especially stood out. She starred in The Edge of Seventeen a year earlier. Kogonada must also have been satisfied, because she can later be seen in his film After Yang.

Columbus has become a warm film that shines in all its simplicity. Kogonada takes time to bring peace to the film. The combination with the architecture is beautifully done.
