Varney is still amusing, but unfortunately the kids have made their comeback in the series, having stayed away from parts 2 and 3. Also a shame that of the entertaining duo Bobby & Chuck only Bobby is left and he gets very little screen time . His new partner Tom is a lot less funny (actually not at all). Still nice and busy and chaotic, although at the same time a lot bland.

After Ernest saves Christmas, that other American commercialized holiday had to be added: Halloween. You have to indicate that he continues with the film series. The first thought was to give the makers a euro out of compassion, but after watching the film you better throw it at them. Just sad...

Musty and stale.

Loved Ernest Scared Stupid as a kid and based on that memory I would have given the movie a small pass. How different it is 20 years later!

The start is still nice, with the introduction of the klutz Ernest and the other characters. I might as well laugh at those silly jokes. But it quickly becomes a repetition of moves. After a while it just starts to get really annoying.

Furthermore, the acting is really horribly bad, especially of the children. Rarely see children pronounce sentences so unnaturally and forced. One look at IMdB also learns that none of them have ever embarked on any further film careers; something that is usually the case with the better child actors.

The story is obviously pretty stupid, you know that in advance. What I didn't remember, however, was the terribly drawn-out finale. We see a kind of 'dance' of extremely badly costumed trolls, children and their parents in Halloween outfit. Not funny, not exciting but just plain stupid. It also went on indefinitely. I won't even start about camera work or effects.

Good youth films remain good, even at a later age (think of Labyrinth or The Never Ending Story). But Ernest has definitely fallen off his pedestal and I don't feel any need to look at his other work. 2** (a last remnant of childhood sentiment)
