Warlock plot

"Wherever you've been ... Whatever you've seen ... You've never run into anything like Warlock."

Infamous gunslinger Clay Blaisedell, hired as a marshal by the residents of Warlock, seems like the right man to protect their town from the ongoing disturbances of the outlaws of the San Pablo Ranch, led by the psychotic Abe McQuown. Clay takes his controversial limping friend and gambler Tom Morgan with him, who takes over a saloon in Warlock. Clay's popularity quickly declines when he refuses to cooperate in the lynching of three imprisoned outlaws. Next, former outlaw Johnny Gannon is appointed deputy sheriff by Warlock's civilian committee and is tasked with solving all of Warlock's problems. A showdown between Clay and Johnny seems inevitable after ex-saloon dancer Lily Dollar, whom Johnny is in love with, accuses Clay and Tom of murdering her fiancé.

Pure classic color western from the late fifties with a gang of bandits but also sheriffs, deputies, marshalls and even a judge, a population that would rather lynch than fight, and also a few charming ladies, one with romance, one with more venom.

In addition, the presence of three film cracks, Fonda, Quinn and Widmark, who provide solid support for the film, although I saw all three of them at work better.

Fortunately they are there, because there is also quite a lot of talk about who is what and if that is allowed and what the law is, and also who is actually in charge and also what happened in the past. , which will somewhat slow down the film, until of course a few final fights (or not) decide how best to proceed.

Certainly a western production with epic allure, but in this case the mayonnaise didn't work for me. What is it about? In itself a film with an interesting storyline. And characters that are not one-dimensional. The risk with more complex characters, however, is that it still has to remain believable somehow. And I didn't get that feeling here, with the way Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, and to a lesser extent Anthony Quinn, shuffled back and forth on the continuum between good and evil. Henry Fonda goes completely uncharacteristically crazy at the end, leaving his fiancé behind without sparing her a glance. Foreign. Although I read here and there that the explanation lies in Fonda's homosexual feelings for Quinn.
Richard Widmark's character appears to have been actively involved in a never-explained massacre in his earlier life (if I remember correctly). And yet he gets away with it and ends up in the film as a representative of the law. Also the way in which he develops from a gang member to a cold-blooded gunman (on the right side of the law), even with a seriously injured hand hmmm…

In any case, a film with a somewhat too long running time for what it ultimately is, and it also contains soap-like elements (the changing relationships with the women and between the men themselves). A soap with a body count, although that verdict may be a little too harsh.

Good western, and this is mainly due to three ambiguous main characters. Their behavior colors outside the lines and that is a break from what you would expect in a standard western. Widmark as an outlaw gang member who then chooses to become a deputy sheriff... This is quite unusual. At first you might think that Blaisedell and his right-hand man Morgan are the heroes of the film, both paid to maintain order in Warlock, which is being terrorized by a gang. But they are not sheriffs and rule the town according to their own rules. A less positive portrait of both men gradually emerges. Towards the end the cards are completely different. The "man with the golden colt" and his companion have become persona non grata and Warlock has found a strong man again in the person of Gannon. A rather unexpected but fitting ending. Completely to my liking...
