Little Boy plot

"Believe the impossible."

In a small American village in the 1940s lives an 8-year-old child nicknamed "Little Boy." Because of his small stature, he is bullied and excluded by peers. His only real friend is his father James. Little Boy's life is turned upside down when his father is called up to fight in the war. Inspired by his comic book hero, Little Boy believes he can make his father come back home. To do this, he will have to befriend the person he fears the most; an old Japanese man who after all represents the face of the enemy.

After the particularly beautiful Bella (2006), director Monteverde once again pleasantly surprises with this occasionally moving family film about the groundbreaking (self) confidence and the determination of a little boy. The film perfectly captures the patriotic, almost hysterical atmosphere that gripped America after Pearl Harbor, including the suspicion and profound dislike of anything Japanese (see also Alan Parker's Come See The Paradise). In that respect it is a striking image of the time, albeit that the village looks much too colorful.

Little can be said about the acting of little Jakob Salvati, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson and the directing by Alejandro Monteverde. That seems to me to be a film to keep an eye on at the Academy Awards.

Well, tastes (and opinions) differ. A nice movie, in my opinion. An entertaining story from start to finish. It looked very nice and I didn't find it boring anywhere. It is well put together and I think the image is nice and bright and colorful. I like the acting. The boy stole my heart and the film touched me. A favourite! 4.5*

Watched this movie and thought it was a good movie. A somewhat different war film that is seen more from the perspective of a child. This approach did work.

I also thought it was beautifully designed and the cast did a great job. The playing time was also good, not too long and not too short. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this film.
