Beautiful war film from the old box. Well acted, nice action scenes, only the story is sometimes a bit weak. I still love those black and white war films, they really give the viewer a much more authentic feeling! It is striking that apart from the two lead roles, the rest of the cast mainly consists of French and Germans, although I don't find this extremely annoyed, I do think it is a shame that everyone in the film still speaks English. Anyway, The Train is just a very good resistance film that is rock solid even now after almost 50 years.

Thanks in particular to the numerous action scenes, an impressive sabotage film, inspired by but not actually based on true events in early August 1944, on the eve of the liberation of Paris. In addition to the staging, the acting is also of a high standard. I am thinking of Burt Lancaster (who, as a former acrobat, performed all the stunts himself), Paul Scofield, Albert Rémy and especially Michel Simon. It's a shame that this monumental, sloppy actor had to be written out of the film early due to contractual obligations elsewhere. I always enjoy seeing the man at work.

In the context of the old war films on the BBC and the disappointing Life and death of Colonel Blimp last year, I was a bit apprehensive about this film, but in the end it more than surprised me in the positive sense.

The run-up is decent, but as soon as Lancaster and the first counter-actions on the shunting yard take place, the film becomes extremely fascinating. Once the train is underway and all the antics, some of them precious as the magic took place with the place, The Train turns out to be a more than fascinating and fun film with tension and speed, well portrayed scenes and camera work.

The disadvantage is the very 'colored' image of the stupid and mean krauts versus the brave resistance heroes. But as said, The Train is an engaging and exciting film for its considerable age. Something that has a double effect as all the spectacle and stunts with the trains are the real deal. The final verdict is therefore that The Train is a fine film with Lancaster and Scofield as eye-catchers.
