Once a movie by Aldrich's book. The image I have of him after watching Kiss Me Deadly and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is that he is a completely unique filmmaker. The Dirty Dozen also seemed like a movie by the book, but he carefully set that book on fire in the last 20 minutes.

That's not the case here. The film may also be somewhat predictable and sometimes even a bit cliché. Still, it's mostly entertaining. Nice setting, well acted and above all a gripping story. It's pretty exciting, especially because with Aldrich I felt like it could go either way with the ending.

4 stars, great movie.

Excellent film in which the survivors of a crashed plane build a new plane from spare parts. Despite the fact that the film is set in one place (the desert), it remains an adventurous story. Apart from the ending, most of the tension comes from the mutual relationships. A fine cast with James Stewart leading the way.

Great survival film that strangely enough didn't do so well in the theaters. When a cargo plane crashes in the middle of the desert, the stranded passengers race against time to find a way out of the plight. A German engineer comes up with an idea that nobody really takes seriously, but which seems to be their only chance of survival. The tensions between the characters propel the film in the right direction and ensure that the film never dozes or becomes less interesting. Of course the acting of Stewart, Attenborough and Kruger is also in between, which gave me the conviction that the film couldn't get much better than this. Between 3.5 and 4*
