Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home plot

"Star date: 1986. How on Earth can they save the future?"

In space, signals are received from whales that have long been extinct on Earth. The signals they transmit cause disturbances in space stations. One of the members of the Enterprise comes up with the idea of traveling back in time and then catching two whales. These whales must respond to the signals or Starfleet's defenses will be powerless. Captain T. Kirk, Dr. Spock and a few other members of the Enterprise face a difficult mission, as it seems there aren't that many whales left on Earth.

Nice film that is quite faithful to the series, unlike the more recent Star Trek films. This film has a special premise: what if extraterrestrial life is not humanoid but consists of another intelligent animal species, such as whales? And what if those whales, which can communicate for miles through the water, have been in contact with their congeners through the universe for centuries without our knowledge? In this film, whales went extinct in the 23rd century, and their congeners send a probe to Earth to investigate their fate. That probe poses a threat to Earth, forcing Captain Kirk's crew to respond. With Arrival (2016) still fresh in the back of my mind, the communication issue reminded me of that film.

The Voyage Home has become a captivating Star Trek film that cannot disappoint fans of the various series. One of the better, if not the best, as far as I'm concerned. Over 3.5*. There is a big difference with the recent Star Trek films, if you expect such an (action) film, it can turn out to be a disappointment.

Excellent film in which a probe with whale sounds heading towards Earth poses a threat. An original story in which the ecological message is very clear, but this does not disturb. The crew of the Enterprise ends up in present-day (read: 1986) San Francisco and this fish-out-of-water feat provides many funny moments. A very entertaining fourth part and my personal favorite.

Same level.

Spock returns for this fourth installment as both the director and Spock himself. Personally, I think he fits perfectly in the series, someone who does not succeed in helping the series much further with his own hands. Just like the other characters actually, because in principle this film follows a very consistent line.

This time we find ourselves in an environment that is not space for a change. This time it is a very familiar world that I thought was very similar to our own world. Some funny bits of satire that are ridiculed in a stubborn way. In that respect I can appreciate this film a bit more than all the previous parts in the series.

Furthermore, it is more or less the same level, only this time some ridiculous things are added, such as whales that need to be rescued. I do wonder how they get it made up in the context of Star Trek. I can not reach it. Other characters are still relatively boring and never come to life. I say it just about every time, but it will always escape me how these people continue to be known as iconic figures.

All in all I was able to enjoy them just as much as I did in previous parts. So that's almost nothing at all. Always nice to get some elements of that time, but oh well. Other than that I can't do much with it so I'm not going to imagine that I can. For now a break in the series that I will interrupt again by putting on the fifth part.
