“It's fucking Chucky!”

With Ready Player One, Spielberg clearly brings out the child in himself again, and his enthusiasm spills over to the viewer. The film is certainly not perfect, but the fun and love for movies, games and pop culture ensures that I have been watching everything with a big smile for the entire playing time. Especially in the best part of the film, an ode to one of my favorite horror films, the smile got bigger and bigger. The winks to films and games such as Jurassic Park, Halo, John Hughes films, King Kong, Back to the Future, Judgment Day, The Iron Giant and Alien (genius) are also fun and inventive.

In the 90s, Spielberg worked simultaneously on Jurassic Park and Schindler's List, and now he's doing it again with The Post and Ready Player One. The man is a chameleon and a formidable director, and despite some disappointing films in recent years, he is now back on top form. With Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke, Spielberg has also cast two young actors who are set to conquer Hollywood in the coming years. And that is ultimately the message of Ready Player One. The youth have the future and can change the world, but then they have to spend less time in their self-created virtual world. "More kissing, less gaming."

Ugh.

This is another one of those, fanboy whine of the worst kind. Reference after reference is fired at the viewer, but one doesn't get any further than a lot of old-fashioned crappy pop culture. A shitty soundtrack and ooh, Alien and Terminantor! And great, someone googled some old game figures. Blessed for the gamers, they recognize something and immediately feel great!

As with more contemporary sci-fi, the future is a world built around one concept. Oasis is a virtual game that suddenly everyone is in and involved with. This nice 1-dimensional vision of the future doesn't offer much else, except for a final moral that we might have to tear ourselves away from the screen, because the real world is the only reality, isn't it? Thank you, Grandpa Spielberg, for those wise words.

It all looks quite expensive, yet the CG is on the ugly side, the soundtrack is unbearable and the stylization of the film is substandard. Inflated Hollywood, yet so very boring, well-behaved and bourgeois that after half an hour it was difficult to keep your eyes open. A lot of noise, yes, but without any impact. That too is an art of course.

Furthermore, a very boring story about three keys that have to be found and a tweenie hero who is going to save the world from evil. Obviously a bad company, among all the other clichés you don't want to be out of tune with the villain.

Spielberg is a non-director. Ready Player One is childish, boring and above all, annoying. And who wants to see Chuckies, there are now 8 or 9 full-fledged films in that series, a cameo in a sci-fi film is really not fun or funny.

1.0*
