Alice falls somewhat in the same vein as The Purple Rose of Cairo, but is slightly more ambitious. Instead of a woman and her love for film, this is about a woman who comes to insights about her entire life, including the relationships with all the people around her. It's quite something, but it's delivered with a lot of humor, as Allen is used to. And with magical realism, which works out especially well in the few scenes with Alec Baldwin, which single-handedly lift Alice a bit above average.

To be honest, the rest is only nice. Funny enough, but sometimes a bit slow and far-fetched, with a run-down happy ending. In addition, I find Farrow flatter than ever here (a role in which Diane Keaton would probably have been ideal) and Joe Mantegna works well as a charmer, but not when he has to be a bit more comical. Fortunately, the supporting roles are very well cast, although it is sometimes a shame that some actors are not seen enough, such as Bernadette Peters.

All in all a nice Allen, but I think there could have been more to this. Small 3.5*

Mia Farrow gives a very good performance as the luxurious woman who is at a loss for herself, fills her days with shopping, body care and chit-chat, but is bored to death and goes looking for a lover.

It is not a film to really love, not exactly fascinating, sometimes funny - occasionally Mia speaks like Woody Allen - but above all it misses the master himself.

Let's call it a little Woody-Allen movie.

A bit cheesy at times, but overall this comedic romantic drama is quite funny. The excellent cast helps a lot, with Mia Farrow as a kind of female Woody Allen who gets involved in an extramarital affair with a saxophone player (Joe Mantegna). The film mainly relies on a number of nice supporting roles (Alec Baldwin, Bernadette Peters) and a number of hilarious moments, which give the pleasantly moving whole a little more spice. Not a high-flyer, but a nice mid-range within Woody Allen's oeuvre.
