Robert Kurtzman – one of the founders of KNB EFX Group – came up with an ode to horror films from the 1980s in 1997. He filled this film not only with practical special effects, but also with familiar faces from the horror world. The film opens with the voice of The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) and stars Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Ted Raimi, Reggie Bannister, Joseph Pilato and George 'Buck' Flower. The writer of the film, Peter Atkins, is best known as the screenwriter of Hellraiser 2, 3 and 4 and that too becomes very clear with a climax that seems to come straight out of Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth. In addition, the main monster the Djinn has many similarities with Pinhead. Incidentally, this role is played with visible pleasure by Andrew Divoff.

Despite this party of recognition for all horror fans, Wishmaster is not really a strong film. Divoff is - just like the many supporting characters - amusing, but the main characters are uninteresting creatures and the acting is often substandard. The practical effects are usually fine, but the CGI is often ugly. Wishmaster is really little more than a small, tasty horror snack with monsters and overblown gore, which is quite pleasant among all those Scream clones that came out around this time. Although Wishmaster also had to piggyback on the success of Scream, it is not for nothing that the name of Wes Craven, who has little to do with the film, has been put on the posters and trailers. This didn't really become a big franchise – the film got three straight-to-video sequels – but that makes sense; because Wishmaster is not much more than good entertainment unfortunately.

3 stars.

Still a fun and entertaining video. Typical 90's horror. The horror level was really good. I also couldn't remember this one at all, so felt like a first watch and enjoyed it anyway. Thought the Wishmaster itself was still cool, had a certain sympathy for it. Still have to watch some more famous horror movies from the 80's and 90's that I don't remember if I've seen them yet... dementia is definitely called that

Time for a review because there are still some sequels that have stayed under my radar. Great intro, nice manipulation of the Jinn, good role, enough gore. 7/10
