Village of the Damned plot

"What Demonic Force Lurks Behind Those Eyes?"

In the British village of Midwich, all the inhabitants suddenly fall asleep in the middle of the day, only to wake up after a few hours. It subsequently appears that a number of women became pregnant during that period. The children they bring into the world have an identical appearance and are highly intelligent from an early age. They also appear to have a special gift for imposing their will on people.

This was a very successful piece of SciFi/Horror. In fact, you are glued to your screen from the first minute. The phenomenon that takes place in the town of Midwich ensures that you immediately watch with fascination. When every fertile woman suddenly turned out to be pregnant, even though this is almost impossible for some, that was the moment I thought to myself "Hey, this could be interesting". Apparently there are not that many women, if you look at the number of rapidly growing children afterwards. Yes, a truly atmospheric and originally conceived film. It is not without reason that a remake was made of this

The first 10 minutes of this science fiction horror film directed by Wolf Rilla promise a very strong ending, but unfortunately Village of the Damned falls apart immediately after those minutes. The problem with these types of films is that they tend to collapse during the build-up, and Rilla is no exception. Fortunately, we get some pretty creepy acting from the kids, who are considerably more interesting than their adult colleagues. How things work out in the end is not exactly exciting (let alone innovative) and this leaves you as a viewer feeling a bit hungry towards the finale. Rilla's unique atmosphere in the first few minutes is nowhere repeated or surpassed. The latter is certainly a shame because in the beginning I thought it was quite positive to look away, but in the end I kept looking at my watch. That's always a shame in a film of only 77 minutes.
