Especially average, this film about a man who ends up in prison because of an unfortunate moment and has to deal with rivalry, hatred and gangs. A grim film, which is quite hard at times, but which lacks tension. The acting wasn't particularly special either. As a whole a reasonable film in the long list of prison dramas, but Felon cannot be called more than reasonable as far as I'm concerned.

The film shows the many malpractice, both by the inmates and the management, in an American prison and that under those circumstances the chance of rehabilitation is virtually non-existent.
Despite the fact that this happens on the basis of identical repetitive incidents, the film remains captivating although the ending did not really appeal to me : suddenly everything accelerates and it all seems simple and certainly cliché (the "bad guys" are punished , the "good" rewarded ). It takes the film to a lower level in my opinion.

Mediocre.

This one was of course earlier, but it is remarkable that Ric Roman Waugh came up with (the better) Shot Caller years later. Pretty much the same movie. Foreign. In any case, Felon can't match that second film. Although Waugh's style is very recognizable, it is still moderately crafted. The film is full of clichés, despite the fact that the story is kept short and compact - with a focus on the fighting in prison on the one hand and the attempt to get out of it on the other.

I didn't see much nuance. Characters like Val Kilmer's have very little to do. In Kilmer's case, that's being the (sort of) mentor, with a greater purpose only at the end. Leading actor Stephen Dorff can't live up to it in my opinion and lacks what it takes to stick.

2.5
