It is often discussed where the slasher genre as we know it really began. Some people point to the 60s with Psycho and Peeping Tom, others point to the late 70s with Halloween. The fact remains that this Mario Bava film is often forgotten in those discussions. Because nine years before Friday the 13th there was Twitch of the Death Nerve. Or Bay of Blood as it was on my DVD. Or Reazione a Catena. Or one of the other thousand titles this film has, just choose one. It is quite clear that the makers of the Friday the 13th series in particular were inspired by this work by Bava; one scene from this film is even literally copied in Friday the 13th Part 2. And just like that franchise, Bay of Blood is also about a lot of killing in one small location.

While Bay of Blood is praised among fans today for its beautiful cinematography, for example, it was razed by many critics at the time for its grotesque murders. In terms of enthusiasm, I'm somewhere in the middle. I mean, the film is well made (certainly for the budget), but the high prices are also a few steps too far for me. Bay of Blood is basically not much more than a Friday the 13th movie; it does what it's supposed to do, but it's not much more than that. The film is relatively short and full of murders, but nevertheless has pacing problems and feels rather stretched in places. The characters are also quite one-dimensional and quite boring figures and the script has little to it; everyone wants everyone dead for a piece of territory and in the end many people die. The latter is - for the enthusiast - anything but a disappointment, the kills and associated gore provide a few excellent sequences. That makes Bay of Blood nothing more and nothing less than an excellent - and very early - slasher.

3 stars.

A Bay of Blood is a fairly bloody film with many strange plot twists and the ending really throws the viewer off. 13 suspects, 13 kills in this pitch-black horror film.

It is a film in which the many murders are combined with black humor. Each victim is killed in a different way and you cannot muster much sympathy given the lack of any character development. The main characters are all selfish, greedy and calculating. Renata (excellent role by Claudine Auger) takes the cake. She is a real bitch who tries to bend everything and everyone to her will. A Bay of Blood is an original, artistic film in its genre with a great eye for style. 7/10

A very nice giallo in which a series of bloody murders take place, all in the context of greed. The kills leave little to the imagination. The necessary blood flows freely. It's like the story of the 10 little fish, because once started there's no stopping them and they fall like flies.

A film with a whodunnit element and necessary plot twists. And it actually doesn't matter to the viewer. No one comes out well, because all are driven by the same motive.

A Bay of Blood has become a stylish film that makes you long for the next giallo. Entertaining and well depicted. With the swimming part you can even see a bit of nudity. Fine!
