"Perhaps the sight of beauty makes him lose control of himself, so he kills."

Blood and Black Lace is one of the very first Giallo films and is regarded by many as the film that started the genre.

A model is found dead and the police begin an investigation. However, the masked killer with his black leather gloves is far from done with his work...

Visually, Blood and Black Lace is a very strong film. Mario Bava experimented with impressionistic lighting here, just as Dario Argento would do in Suspiria and Inferno. The high contrast further enhances the use of color and also causes chiaroscuro-like shadows in the close-ups. The cinematography is also particularly strong. The opening where we see the entire cast standing between the mannequins was also very nice.

However, I didn't like the movie as much as the story. The concept is fine, but I ended up thinking it was more of a crime movie and not really a Giallo. The film remains captivating from start to finish, although I found the climax a bit less.

For the 1960s, Blood and Black Lace is a pretty brutal film, with hard murder scenes. If you see what Bava would do later in the 70s, it is still quite good.

The film had a good soundtrack by Carlo Rustichelli, a combination of jazzy music and exciting suspense music. The soundtrack often reminded me of Gothic horror (as Bava also made).

All in all, Blood and Black Lace is of course a must-see for the Giallo enthusiast. Visually, the film is beautiful and the film never gets boring.

Visually strong film full of murders that are still fairly neatly portrayed, the gore is not too bad. For one of the earlier films in the genre and given the year, that is not surprising. The story is quite coherent and the characters are okay, but what makes the film worthwhile after more than 50 years is the stylish direction and camera work, full of beautiful shots and clever use of color and music. A style that is unfortunately hard to find anymore.

Wonderful cinema and I would give something (eg the price of a movie ticket) to see this on the big screen. So this is where Dario Argento got the mustard from and then especially Suspiria is a (successful) impression of this. Mario Bava strikes me as a true original with its combination of chiaroscuro, baroque decors and a hypnotic color palette. The whodunit story also contains a logic that is not always found in his followers. Is it well acted? That's not the point for me. It is theatrical at times, but that fits perfectly with the style of the film. This is a film with the grandeur of a horror opera. To look, to review and to admire.
