Fairly mediocre zombie film, nowhere very original, not always well acted, weak story and disappointing special effects. The film lacks a number of points on all fronts, which makes this one of the lesser zombie films for me. Also, the film never really wants to get exciting, despite the big mountain of action that is (literally) fired at you.

Unfortunately, do not go further than 2 *.

Day of the Dead is a fairly mediocre zombie film that manages to place itself in the list of "worst zombie films". In my opinion, the film could have been better if the quality of the first half hour had been extended to the end. The first part is really not that bad. The film starts like most zombie films: chaos and panic. What exactly is going on? Is there a virus or bacteria at work? As the film progresses and the effects come into focus, it immediately becomes apparent why this film is quite bad: amateurish effects and zombies who do some kind of sprint running, as if they have all just taken the drug speed.

You can hardly speak of acting. The characters are full of clichés and a few are annoying. The only one who plays decent is Mena Suvari and that's mainly because she's pretty and because she's pretty much the only woman in the army (I would like more women in the army anyway). Michael Welch plays an irritating and panicky little guy who should have had his throat bitten by a zombie right away. Nick Cannon plays the most incredible soldier there is. Kind of a cross between a gangster and a soldier. It's so ridiculous that it started to annoy me.

The best thing about the movie are the massacres, and that's what we all watch a zombie movie for. But Day of the Dead otherwise fails in almost every way. The cheap effects kill the film. Add to this boring and unbelievable characters and you have a zombie movie that you should forget as soon as possible. The hour and a half that the film lasts is better spent on a zombie film with better reviews.

2*

Thrown in despite the mediocre reviews. Personally, I find zombie movies similar to pizza because of the moto: 'Even when it's bad it's still pretty good'.

Still, the first ten minutes make me fear the worst. Cardboard characters, mediocre soldiers, cliché teenage love...but when the mess breaks out in the hospital, the film jumps from its mediocre level to a higher gear. And what one!

Let's be honest, the acting is far from the best. The only real name, Rhames, is quickly killed and some CGI elements such as the zombie walking across the suspended ceiling are too bad for words. But...with Suvari we not only have a delicious piece of eye candy, but also a great leading lady. In addition, the zombies with their speed, jumping power and cleverness are a completely new ball game and quite fun for a change. And the atmosphere is far from heavy horror, but rather a comic-like 'gore' that is very entertaining.

In that sense, Day of the Dead is in everything a break with the old and original of Romero. Nevertheless, this DotD is a more than delicious and entertaining print that has the necessary beauty flaws, but we don't bother about that. Just very nice.
