Excellent film about a man who decides to swim home through the pools in people's gardens. An original film in many ways. The film consists of short encounters with each a different character and excellent dialogues in which you slowly get to know the main character. Beautiful camera work, beautiful locations and Burt Lancaster is excellent in the title role.

Very unique film with a special, mysterious, surreal summer atmosphere that you will not find anywhere else. Just because of that atmosphere, it is a nice film to watch on a balmy, summer evening with a Gin and tonic.

Ned, the main character decides to swim home through pools of people he knows in a wealthy neighborhood where everyone has a pool. This idea doesn't make any sense at all unless you've smoked weed or have brain damage, but this is an idea that the main character gets into his head and is very excited about. This is man who is very enthusiastic about pools and swimming and water. At first he seems to be the most active, sporty and successful man around and his friends who are the same age are more people who sit by the pool and drink.

So he starts this journey where you soon notice that something is wrong with Ned and that he is actually not that successful at all and the journey gets colder and colder. At one point he says that there is something wrong with the sun, it shines but there is no heat in it. This is a melancholic journey with themes such as the facade of the American dream, decadence and aging and life's disappointments. While the ending is quite predictable, it's all pretty gruesome. The scene at the tennis court is quite spooky.

The film is good because you understand it without chewing out what exactly happened to the audience, so you can easily watch the film several times for the atmosphere and the ambiguous conversations. This is also a film that makes you think about your own life and your own illusions. The film is from 1968 but has not aged, quite interesting. The downside of this film is the scene that they jump hand in hand like a bunch of happy jerks over beams like a couple of horses. That all took too long...

But otherwise a unique film.
