Very nice movie by Jackson. Colorful and indeed sometimes very sweet, with or without a strong concept.

It is a bit the old story about how you observe your loved ones and relatives as a dead person. That happens to 14-year-old Susie. We are in the tolerant 1970s where sexual freedom and sobriety are the order of the day. At least, I do believe that it was Jackson's intention to use that atmosphere. The sobriety also allows many things to be overlooked with less attention being paid to sexual predators. One day Susie comes face to face with her neighbor George Harvey, a rather startling man. She succumbs to his action and then, before going to heaven, Susie gets to watch her family suffer from her loss, how her neighbor gets away with it, and even... to say goodbye to her life.

Against the odds, Peter Jackson manages to do a striking job here. The 70s settings are very attractively reproduced here, but in the meantime the dreamy settings in the in-between world are also colorful and eye-pleasing. I had to think a bit about Re-Cycle. The stories that rotate between Susie and the Salmon family are very strong and often manage to give you a complex view. Her father Jack is again very well portrayed here by Mark Wahlberg, a man who must and will know what happened to Susie and then causes much more misery in the family. The view into the life of George Harvey is also getting sicker.

The walk to the end is also very beautiful. Add Song to the Siren by This Mortel Coil... It's just that I'm a bit seasoned by now otherwise the tears would roll down my cheeks. Harvey 's karma was delicious.

A beautiful but hard fairy tale.

I read that some see comedy in this? I find that strange because I may have laughed once. If this was a comedy no one would take it seriously.

I thought it was a decent film, nothing more or less. Wahlberg is not very suitable for this role, although he often plays in dramas, I did not find this one for him. Rachel Weisz is okay. The mother who comes to help was a bit over the top. I think the first movie I see with Saoirse Ronan. Not exactly my favorite actress I think because she really doesn't act well here. Or it's her voice that's downright irritating. Stanley Tucci probably plays the best part of the film despite the fact that he doesn't seem to put much effort into it.

The best moment is clearly when Susie's sister breaks into Stanley Tucci. Then things get tense. For the rest it is all fairly dreamy, which also ensures that you yourself are carried away in that dream and it never really gets boring. I found the ending a bit far-fetched with that icicle that causes Stanley to lose his balance and make a horrific fall on the rocks. You deserve it.

Also nice was Peter Jackson's cameo in the shop where Wahlberg will be developing his photos.
It was also nice that a poster (I think) of Lord of the Rings came into view. 3.5* but only thanks to the originality otherwise it would have been a 3*.

“When I was alive, I never hated anyone. But now hate was all that I had.”

Fairytale film with enough drama and also a thriller element. A difficult cocktail, but for the most part Peter Jackson manages to turn it into an atmospheric and cohesive film. The Lovely Bones is especially impressive in the beginning, and then the visual part slowly takes over with Ronan watching from a visually overwhelmed purgatory as her parents, sister, brother and murderer deal with her disappearance.

This is also the part where The Lovely Bones gets stuck, and what gets disjointed and messy. The mourning of the parents (Weisz and Wahlberg) seems a bit superficial and hasty, and the role of the sister (played fantastically by McIver) is interesting but too little developed. There are so many storylines that Jackson doesn't work everything out well, although the actors know how to keep your attention. There is drama and tension in the film, but it is clear that the fantasy element comes into its own with Jackson. Although the scene with Tucci and McIver does produce some nail-biting tension at the end. But then there is another strange kissing scene and you are almost watching a young adult film. It provides an at times almost schizophrenic viewing experience. But also an impressive and visually overwhelming film experience.
