Le Combat dans l'Île plot

Clément (Jean-Louis Tritignant) is a right-wing rioter who is married to aspiring actress Anne (Romy Schneider). He belongs to an underground terrorist group determined to spread chaos across Western nations in order to gain political control. He plans an assassination attempt on a great socialist leader, which ultimately fails thanks to an informant. Clément sets out to find the informant and in the meantime he has his so-called friend Paul (Henri Serre) keep an eye on his wife.

Contrary to what the title would suggest, it is rather a psychological drama, albeit with a violent background.

Alain Cavalier is actually unknown to me, but I hear from the supervision of Louis Malle and some things seem recognizable : the sometimes theatrical of the actors, the fluctuating emotions and the not always understandable reactions of the characters.

The film certainly has the necessary tension, the dialogues are ready, clear and simple, but the music exaggerates in intensity every time a new fact arises in the intrigue.

With Romy Schneider, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Henri Serre, the film is good in terms of acting performances.

Typically a product of its time. The first half of the film is especially convincing. Nice to see both Trintignant and Schneider in their younger years.
