Jacques Perrin expects a real military adventure, but ends up in a fort bordering a desert where nothing happens.

Allen Max von Sydow once raised the alarm as a young officer after seeing three horsemen coming out of the desert... a figment of his imagination or was danger lurking?

Beautiful location but everyone wants to leave as soon as possible, because it borders on the big NOTHING.

Strange almost surreal film about threats from nowhere and places that can make you physically ill.

I watched this movie a few days ago. No idea what I was going to watch beforehand.

I have to say this movie just won't let me go. I'm still thinking about it a few days later.

It's a beautiful film. Beautiful location. The story is really, yes.. I have no other word for it, phenomenal.

Look, I have to admit that I am not a wordsmith, so I have a hard time describing all the metaphors in the film. But a few attempts I want to make.

Time, is the great equalizer. Your life flies through your fingers without you having any influence on it. The senselessness of war. The bizarreness of the relationships in the army. Etc etc.

I think it's a jewel.

First seen in the Filmhuis in Delft, 1976. Was deeply impressed at the time. Brilliant film about an indefinable threat. On the edge of society. The daily routine must provide stability and is just as meaningless as daily existence. A place where you are forgotten, where you get sick, die. What that does to you is shown by the old colonel, a beautiful inconspicuous role by Fernando Rey.

Strong cast with Jacques Perrin, Max von Sydow and Helmut Griem. And Jean-Louis Trintignant as the doctor and Philippe Noiret as the general. The top of the international acting world at the time. They did show up for Zurlini. Came across this film again by chance. Found it just as impressive as back then. Two and a half hours flew by. As a viewer you are almost literally drawn into that strange world.

What we see is actually a somewhat modified version of the Austro-Hungarian army under Emperor Franz Josef. With almost the same uniforms, tsjakos, banners and customs. You have to think of the north-eastern border with Russia, a godforsaken area that you find in the work of Robert von Musil and Joseph Roth. For Tartars you can also think of Russians and the citadel may represent the fortress city of Przemyśl, at the time the fourth largest fortress in Europe. It was conquered by the Russians quite soon after the start of the First World War.

The citadel in this film is the citadel of Bam, in southern Iran, largely destroyed by an earthquake in 2003. The status of the restoration is unclear.
