Laurence Anyways plot

"Will the woman she wants love the woman she wants to be?"

In 1989 Laurence celebrates his 30th birthday in a restaurant with Fred, his girlfriend. When he expresses his desire to become a woman, their lives change drastically. Still, Fred agrees to accompany Laurence through the transformation. In January 1990 he returned to work as a literature professor, disguising himself as a woman. A new life begins. But despite the promising start, social prejudice, family disapproval and incompatibility within the couple become a heavy burden. Lies, secrets and hypocrisy are part of the lives of Laurence and Fred, who will have to pull out all the stops to save their relationship.

My 4th Dolan film after Tom a la ferme, Les Amour Imaginaires and J'ai tue ma mѐre. A very adult romantic drama film with a charged subject. Striking: Laurence sounds like a girl's name and Fred like a boy's name. Beautiful cinematography: lots of red accents, clothes matching the wallpaper, swirling dust particles, waterfall scene, rain of clothes, autumn leaves scene... I also thought the written text on Laurence's back was special! He was a late bloomer in coming out, which made acceptance by others more difficult. Laurence says he is not gay, but a man with gender dysphoria who after transition becomes a trans woman and is attracted to women is actually a lesbian. Transition is often more gradual: hormones, longer hair, more feminine clothing... Unfortunately, Laurence looked more like a transvestite in the film. Beautiful and charming ending, which was actually the beginning, with great music! I liked the film even more when I looked up the background information about Luce Baillairgé, how wonderful that she inspired Xavier to make this film!!

Wonderboy Xavier Dolan has a level for such a young filmmaker. Laurence and Fred's love fairy tale is turned upside down when Laurence expresses his wish to continue life as a woman. Fred remains in love and initially supports him, but slowly but surely the passion fades under social pressure and the expectations of certain gender roles (but what do you want Fred? A man!). You can't have everything in life. life and sometimes a crucial life choice requires painful sacrifices.

I have the same thing as other users: you can't feel the 160 minutes (though I ultimately thought the film was a bit too long for what there was to say). On the one hand, because the narrative covers a period of ten years, there is a lot of pace in the successive scenes, which are also well varied in terms of style: now and then a surreal moment, video clip style, musical pieces, etc. But especially the emotional involvement that Dolan stimulates the viewer, completely drew me in. A good film, sober yet stylish, beautifully and lifelike acting, without false sentiment. Just as good as The Danish Girl and Una Mujer Fantastica, both of which also received 3.5*.

Interesting film about a man who comes out to become a woman. Indeed, it is not the transformation that is central here, but the reactions and events in its environment are central. First of all, his relationship with Fred, his girlfriend. Not obvious, but she tries to open up to her boyfriend's desires. It's amazing how despite all the difficulties, the disappointment, the expectations, the social pressure, she still tries to go for it, but you can't control love and feelings.

What a great scene there in the restaurant, how that one was put in her place. For me, the moment of the film that encompasses everything: anger, faith, hope and, above all, love. But there were still strong moments in the film. The moment in front of the class or the moment he gets fired.

However, I didn't really understand it at those different time jumps. It still felt fragmented and, like some others, I found more than 2.5 hours quite tough. But Dolan makes something of it so that it all remains manageable.
