If I am to believe the reports – well, there is a lot of fake news – this film by the child prodigy Xavier Dolan was mercilessly criticized. Why is a mystery to me, because Dolan once again delivered excellent craftsmanship with this film based on a play. The actors managed to portray the bickering family members in a formidable way. Lots of shouting and not listening. Boy, boy, I had to think of my own family every now and then. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed this film - the time flew by - which also had an excellent ending. Louis did not just drop by for a visit. He had something very important to share, but afterwards he didn't. Why he didn't was not explained. But if you followed the film closely, that should be very clear to everyone. Oh yes, with the never-ending stream of bickering between those dysfunctional family members, the flashback sequences were very welcome. At least you could catch your breath.

4.5*

Based on a play and that is very clear, this psychological drama, which actually deserves appreciation just because it is not too bad in film language, granted that the cast is very strong, with Vincent Cassel in particular attracting attention.

A dying man seeks nostalgia and support from his family and only finds indifferent, frustrated people who are constantly deeply insulting each other. It should be noted that Gaspard Ulliel cleverly conveys emotions such as disbelief at what he is experiencing and deep disappointment in the many close-ups.

While the first "family" scene is definitely chaotic and difficult to follow, there are a few later scenes where the strongly introverted characters are better highlighted.

Not a very accessible film, in my opinion, but still good enough for the Jury Prize in Cannes and a nomination for the Palme d'Or.

I can perfectly imagine why Louis hasn't seen his family for twelve years. If it had been up to him, it would have taken much longer. The step he took after twelve years must have been immense. And there you are with an egocentric family that constantly argues about trivialities. Vicarious shame created it. Should you bare your soul for that? Dolan succeeds in placing that dilemma beautifully. I do like his interpersonal style of films.

Painful tension, but great acting and great cinematography (camera work). The camera was often close to it, this in contrast to the security and respect for each other that felt far away. For some perhaps a boring film, but I was in the film and found it quite entertaining. Not his best work, but still more than good. Fan of Dolan's oeuvre anyway.
