Hillbilly Elegy plot

"Inspired by a true story three generations in the making."

JD Vance, a former Southern Ohio Marine studying law at Yale University, is offered a dream job but is forced by a family crisis to return to the place he grew up in and wants to forget. JD is confronted with the complicated dynamics of his family in Appalachia, including his explosive relationship with his addicted mother Bev. However, memories of his grandmother Mamaw, the resilient, smart woman who raised him, make JD realize how much his family has positively influenced his own life trajectory.

Thoroughly enjoyed this poignant drama in which origin has a major influence on your life and future. Kentucky is the poorest state in the United States and is home to quite a few low-educated white poor. You will only grow up in such a dysfunctional family where your heritage hangs around your neck like a millstone. Very fine role of the materfamilias who sees her daughter slip over and over again. Although she has also had an eventful life, she takes care of her grandson.

The bond she has with him is endearing and reminds me of my own bond with my blessed grandmother. In life it is a matter of seizing your opportunities, however scarce or difficult they may be. Vance has clicked, but the past continues to haunt him. Very charismatic and touching role of Glenn Close as Mawmaw, but also Amy Adams was strong in her role, a role balancing between wanting the best for her children, but at the same time "hatred" them because they mortgaged her future. Confronting at times. Despite everything, the family remains close, no matter what.

The film is also fine in terms of editing. The flashbacks are valuable and are smoothly incorporated into the film. Hillbilly Elegy is a convincing and penetrating portrait - not least because of the strong acting. Maybe not original, because the story is not new. The plot isn't exactly forward-thinking either, but I still enjoyed it, often in the little things, sadness, hope, fear, loyalty and forgiveness. Beautiful!

Very good movie, I was drawn into the story. There are many difficult events, so it is usually not a really nice movie to watch, but the story is very interesting. It paints an unromantic American picture with poverty, drug use and family problems. The film shows the complex relationships between each other, bit by bit you get to know more and the characters get more depth. Good movie to think about and watch again in a while.

Ron Howard has once again made something beautiful out of this true story. The story itself was disappointing, 13 in a dozen, but the film adaptation was good. The cast, especially Glen Close, did a great job and the music by Zimmer, among others, was a nice addition. Howard always knows how to make a colorful whole, literally and figuratively, and also knows how to realistically portray the intense moments.
