“They say money can't buy happiness? Look at the fucking smile on my face. Ear to ear, baby.”

Gordon Gekko wannabes themselves go way over the line and become incredibly rich, but it ultimately means their downfall. The famous rise and fall story. The madness of, for example, The Wolf of Wall Street is never approached and the exciting battle between Gordon Gekko and Bud Fox does not deliver.

But the yuppy life is well portrayed and the actors and dialogues are strong. The telephone conversations with potential buyers in particular make for entertaining scenes. And there are plenty of those in Boiler Room.

The little brother of Wolf of Wall Street.

Even if it's just based on the subject. The characters are also very different. Where TWOWS focuses on comedy by creating unbelievable situations, here is largely focused on drama. I like the lighter tone of Scorsese much better, although Boiler Room is still a pretty nice film. The subject just remains very strong, and here too it is handled nicely at times, although in the end it lacks the flair and playfulness to speak of a really good film.

Small 3*.

Better than expected.

Thought this movie could serve mainly as a good joke. However you make it up, Vin Diesel in the role of serious and hard businessman. I only know him from action movies. This might even be the first movie he's in that doesn't have bullets constantly flying around your ears.

Fortunately, I soon turned out to be wrong, because despite the fact that it is not an action film, the absurd breaks through, especially in the first half. A real feeling of pressure and stress is never present, but a nice pace combined with a story that fits the tone well. Slightly less focused on drama, more on the business world itself and Ribisi's character that gradually develops in it.

The second half is somewhat slower in nature and the fact that a romantic plot has to be incorporated is inhibiting, otherwise Boiler Room looked much better than I expected. It is a film that quickly comes to its point of view and spends little time on introduction. I find that quite a relief in a film like this one, because you see it happen more often that they culminate in slow dramas with a lot of nonsense.

It is a pity that the second half focuses a bit more on drama, and with that the fun of the first hour quickly comes to an end. Quite an entertaining film for once, although it is more of a film that, thanks to its somewhat chaotic character and amount of humor, can distinguish itself from similar films that share the same subjects.
