A rather unusual and therefore also fascinating mix of musical, crime and drama. The story revolves around a cartel leader who starts a second life on paper, but also physically. That gives rise to a struggle on many levels with the past. Strongly portrayed by leading role Karla Sofía Gascón who already received an award in Cannes (as did the direction). But Zoe Saldaña and Selina Gomez also provide sufficient pepper and salt. And then they pour everything into a musical, which visually lifts the whole thing to a higher level. Beautiful songs and visually more than what you would expect from this type of story. Director Jacques Audiard has built up an interesting track record in the meantime and delivers another beautiful film.

I don't think the general public will go crazy for this film. Good thing, because I fear a lot of negative comments. If not for the transgender issue, then perhaps for the musical. Very daring indeed, the latter, but extremely successful nonetheless. Occasionally with a dance, but rather with powerful songs with a message. They could just as well have been separate dialogues, but the lyrics are strong and the song ensures that the content sticks extra hard.

Emilia Perez is more or less a crime film wrapped in a drama and musical jacket. Not obvious and Audiard succeeds in finding this difficult and unusual balance. It is also the trump card of this film. Once again Audiard succeeds in creating a strong independent film, The Sisters brothers perhaps apart.

Won prizes in Cannes, where the Jury Prize was won. A film about identity, letting go, forgiveness and penance. Karla Sofia Gascon and Zoe Saldana play the roof off. A remarkable film in any case and one of the eye-catchers of 2024.

Assistant attorney Rita [Zoe Saldana] is tired of defending criminal men for peanuts. But for 2 billion Mexican pesos, she'll help cartel leader Manitas Del Monte [Karla Sofía Gascón] (who is responsible for hundreds of deaths) arrange a sex change operation so he can start a new life as Emilia Pérez. Four years later, Emilia calls on Rita again, this time to torment her widow Jessi [Selena Gomez] and her sons and hypocritically clean up her own act. A ridiculous story that could have served as a comic opera, but Audiard takes this nonsense completely seriously and even tries to arouse sympathy for a hypocritical mass murderer! The enormous irony of the final scene seems to have escaped him completely! Paul Guilhaume's camerawork and Damien Jalet's choreography are excellent, but their effort is wasted. Fodder for the Cannes Film Festival, where (unsurprisingly) it won two awards.
