In the 1980s, the troubled Chan Lok-kwun accidentally ends up in the densely populated city of Kowloon Walled City. He learns the hierarchy and important life lessons. He makes friends with Shin, Twelfth Master and AV. The city is led by Tornado with whom they prepare for the battle against Mr. Big. They want to protect their home at all costs.

Finally (at least).
I once came across a photo report about Kowloon, and ever since I have been fascinated by this city-within-a-city (which no longer exists for a while). It probably wouldn't have been the nicest place, but the cinematic potential is enormous, so I never really understood why more films didn't try to exploit it.
But now it is, even though the project took about 20 years to be completed. In any case, Soi Cheang is the perfect person behind the camera. Lots of familiar faces too, a classic crime story, with a lot of attention to action (including the larger-than-life child) and a nice pace. But Kowloon remains the main attraction of this film.
And the great thing is that there are two more parts coming. I am rarely enthusiastic about film series, this is a welcome exception.

Starts off very strong: cool action scenes, a dazzling use of color and an impressive sense of depth in and around the densely populated enclave of Kowloon, also known as The Walled City. Nice characters too. After the first hour, however, the fun is largely over and everything slowly but surely starts to go over the top. And not in a pleasant way. The action scenes in particular suffer from this, to the point that they hardly make an impression anymore. Too bad, because this had a lot of potential.
