A film with a run-of-the-mill story in which someone wants to set up a project with others that may/may/may/may/may/may succeed, but is otherwise not innovative in any way. No comic edge, no plot twists, cinematographically nothing special, etc.

The film also didn't have to rely on the acting, but the cast turns out to be largely made up of real people. And since it's about theatre, you get more drama school acting than convincing emotions.

It wasn't boring at all, so I don't want to give it a bad grade.

Saw it in NYC. In American cinemas you can get a whole contraption to read subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing; a kind of telephone with Subcatch on a flexible stand. (I missed the screening with open subtitles.) Worked like a charm. Sometimes you have to work hard to keep up when the talking is fast.

Ah, a film about theatre (how come filmmakers always have a certain love for theatre?) and that translates into the film: this thing could just as well have been played on stage. Nothing is really done with the medium of film. No special shots, no special photography, nothing special done with the camera or editing. Even the fact that this takes place in prison is hardly mentioned. Only once when guards once again turn a room upside down with the search or when people talk about releases etc.

The subject is nice and Domingo naturally has you with his charisma and you already agree with him so that is usually fine. Besides that he still puts some feeling into his role. Too bad that the film then has a fairly predictable course with somewhere after 2/3 the emotional outburst. So the film does not surprise anywhere. Due to the endearing acting you can still sit through it but that's it. 2.5*.

Sing Sing is a maximum security prison for serious criminals. John “Divine G” Whitfield [Colman Domingo] is serving a life sentence and is one of the founders and standard bearers of a theater company for inmates that puts on a play twice a year. His hopes for early release have grown since a tape surfaced in which another inmate confesses to being responsible for the murder for which Divine G was convicted. Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin (playing himself) is the newcomer to the group who undergoes a personal transformation through theater with Divine G as his mentor. Sean San Jose (as Mike Mike) and Paul Raci (as director Brent Buell) are the only other actors, the other men play themselves. The authenticity and relaxed atmosphere (unusual for a prison film) give this something extra, but the script is unfortunately rather conventional, the denouement is sluggish with his mannered acting Domingo is outplayed by Buell and “Divine Eye”.
