Goosebumps plot

"The stories are alive."

Teen Zach Cooper doesn't like the idea of moving from the big city to the country. But when he meets his beautiful girl next door Hannah, he brightens up. However, Hannah has a mysterious father, none other than RL Stine, author of the bestselling "Goosebumps" series. Stine is a strange man and the reason for that is that he is a prisoner of his own imagination. The monsters that make his books so famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by imprisoning them in his books. When Zach accidentally releases the monsters, they begin to terrorize the village.

Pretty nice combination of comedy, adventure and (a little bit) horror film.

Jack Black does a good job as RL Stine who also shows up himself at the end and the rest of the cast also puts in a nice performance. The story is fairly original in design but the elaboration is quite predictable although the references to various classic movie characters are funny.

The strongest point of Goosebumps is the nice atmosphere that reminds me a bit of films like the Burbs and the Goonies. That level is not quite reached here, partly due to moderate effects (I liked the garden gnomes the most), but that does not alter the fact that this quite an entertaining movie.

Ample.

“You just released every monster I've ever created!”

Nice movie that clearly got its inspiration from the 80's coming of age movies. With lots of monsters and a nice chemistry between the cast members. Jack Black, Minnette, Rush and Lee, all four are perfectly cast and fit right in with the colorful world that director Letterman and creator RL Stine have created. It doesn't get really scary anywhere, but Slappy as a talking doll will give many children sleepless nights. This really is one of those movies aimed at a young audience, but adults can enjoy it too. Goosebumps has everything it takes to achieve cult status, and the film can count on me as a fan too.

Amusing.

I've read the books too. They are children's books, but I must confess that I did enjoy reading them. When I saw that there was also a movie, I watched it. And I thought it was pretty good too.

In terms of effects, it's all good too. Not very high-end things, but they are fine to look at. Slappy was also a nice character. The film doesn't want to get really exciting anywhere, but it certainly looks good.

Still having fun with this. It's not a masterpiece, but I liked it enough.
