Nice.

But it is clear that this film is currently being pushed into expectations that are far beyond its capabilities. Omoide no Mani should actually be more of a filler release. A snack while Ghibli's big guns recharge. But with the news that Miyazaki and Takahata are quitting and Ghibli's message that they will temporarily stop making feature films, this has suddenly become Ghibli's swan song.

Yonebayashi is clearly still looking for his own identity. He tinkers with the Ghibli formula left and right, it worked a little better with Arrietty than here. With this Marnie I mainly had the feeling that it was aimed at younger girls, which certainly made me a bit lost in the middle part and it sometimes became a bit boring. Nice play dates between two young girls and such, but in my opinion it could have been a little more spicy.

However, the beginning and end are worth it. Typical Ghibli setup (escape from the city to the countryside), very nice animation and strong voice work. And of course many small details that often make the difference. There is definitely plenty to enjoy in this film and I suspect that most Ghibli fans will not come back from a bare-bones trip, but you do expect a little more from Ghibli's "last" feature film.

Yonebayashi has now left Ghibli, hopefully he will find a new home where he can further develop his style. I think he has plenty to offer, which this film shows despite some minor shortcomings.

Big 3.5*

Quite nice. The animation remains beautiful once again. If this had simply been filmed, it would not have been so special, but because it is all drawn it gives it an enchanting appearance. That typical realistic style in modern times with trains, billboards or refrigerators full of food, that remains beautiful. It is true that this attention towards the visual often slowly fades through habituation and at the end you don't know any different. In some ways it is a shame that that amazement often only lasts for half an hour.

The story is nice, albeit a bit tame. But Anna was a nice character and I could identify with that. I am not as extreme as her, but I also prefer to retreat alone and have a great time. Or strange people who suddenly speak to me, not always pleasant. The voice work is also excellent, nicely spoken in a calm manner.

The second part of the film is slightly less so, when the emphasis shifts more to the relationship between Anna and Marnie and the boundary between dream and reality becomes increasingly blurred. That doesn't bother me much. And that is often the case with Ghibli films. In Spirited Away this was nicely solved by sending Chihiro into a fantasy world, but here it works less well. 3.5*.

A beautiful story of a broken girl who becomes whole again through a spiritual encounter with her deceased grandmother.
