First unsatisfactory for a Ghibli/Miyazaki.

I largely share the critiques others have here. Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind has turned out to be a long-winded sermon, the message of which I was tired of after fifteen minutes. The characters are mediocre and the animations (for a Ghibli), quite uninspired. Only some insects were beautifully designed, the rest (the poisonous jungle, the backgrounds, the planes, the people themselves) is now quite dated.

Biggest problem is that everything revolves around Princess Nausicaa. Because everything about her is good, she will soon dislike you. She is the only one who can talk to animals, she is the only one who knows how to deal with nature, she is the only one who takes the (right) actions. The rest of the characters are so passive that they hardly matter. Most of them barely speak more than three sentences. Then you may still have such a top cast in the English version with Patrick Stewart, Uma Thurman, Shia LaBeouf and Mark Hamill, but what good is it this way?

I don't think it's a serious fail, that's why the dystopian future in itself is quite nice, but the way in which the ecological theme is presented is getting boring. 2.5*

Ghibli is often hit or miss with me and that miss is mainly in the films that no longer play in our own world (or at least, worlds that are a bit like it) but more in a fantasy world. And that is also the case in this film. Visually not very well drawn, production design boring and the whole world doesn't interest me. It also plays that the main character here is all goodness and therefore also very boring as main character. So the things that the film is all about do not interest me for a moment and so this becomes a long session with nothing else for me. 1.5*.
