My girlfriend had wanted to watch this film together for a long time, and what I feared was confirmed: The Tourist is a romantic nobody without any tension or a good story. I quickly realized how the fork is in the stem and who Alexander Pearce was.

The statues in Venice are of course beautiful, how could it be otherwise? Put a camera there and you have a beautiful picture! However, the story is so simple and uninteresting that this film does not captivate for a moment.

They probably thought they would make some sort of Hitchcock-esque suspense movie, and expected Depp and Jolie to play a memorable role that would remind us of a charming Cary Grant and an elegant Grace Kelly, but that failed miserably.

“Why is everyone trying to kill me?”

Messy. With Venice as the location and Angelina Jolie as the lead actress, you are actually already ahead 3-0 as a film, but director Von Donnersmarck manages to squander the lead nicely. The story is messy and lacks suspense. That can be made up for by the chemistry between the actors, but between Jolie and Depp things are not going well. Depp in particular walks around a bit dazed, although that can also be due to the role. Bettany and Dalton in a small role are doing great. But as a whole, The Tourist just doesn't impress enough.

What a strange movie.

And that of the director of Das Leben der Anderen, I can hardly connect the two. In terms of style, they really have nothing to do with each other, unfortunately this film suffers from that, because Donnersmarck is really out of place here.

The Tourist is a spy thriller by design, but Donnersmarck clearly didn't feel like it. He makes a romantic version of it, with some comic touches. A lot of attention to style and presentation, but this film falls just short of that. It therefore takes a while to find where Donnersmarck actually wants to go, because especially the beginning of the film (on the train and such) feels very forced and uncomfortable.

Depp plays fairly restrained, Jolie just exaggerated, while a little natural would have done the roles well. Donnersmarck could have given the prestigious feeling better through the stylization, but he doesn't really succeed in that. He does his best, but it doesn't sound or look really majestic anywhere. To bring that to a good end you need someone ala Kar-wai, but I don't see them making this kind of film very soon.

Kudos to Donnersmarck for wanting to try it, it's something unique and different from the lame flawed thrillers that Hollywood normally presents, but the elaboration and finish are just not good enough.

2.5*

BuThe name "Florian Henkel von Donnersmarck", the German director, raises the expectation to see the film. "The lives of others" is an important and eternal work of his. At first glance, the movie "Tourist" seems like a box-office friendly and entertaining movie, and the presence of big stars like "Angelina Jolie" and "Johnny Depp" can be considered to attract the audience. At the beginning of the film, this mentality is disrupted by "Donnersmarck" and we come across an attractive film in the crime/mystery genre, a film that has the tone and style of Donnersmark. But alas, after the first 20 minutes, the quality of the movie decreases as we move forward, and in the end, we end up watching the movie with a superficial and clichéd movie. The film turns to comedy after twenty minutes and actually wanders between these two genres. Anyway, sometimes directors have to make every movie as it is, but "Donnersmarck" and "The Lives of Others" are always immortal for me.
