Deployed half way through. Couldn't care for me for a moment, a bit bland too.

Maybe try again later.

You would expect Depp to put down a smart fast boy with the main character, George Jung, but the opposite is true. George is meek and even looks a bit insecure, as if it all just happened to him himself, and in a way it has. In that respect, Blow is a fresh film with a smooth storyline. But it never really gets surprising and at the end the film bleeds to death, just like George's career.

Depp-a-thon / Sjonniespectieve

Part three of the Sjonniespectieve. A decade ago I kicked Blow into the ground on this website with a somewhat bland school essay. While my arguments may make sense, I'm glad I've gotten more lenient and sluggish over the years. I quite enjoyed this easily digestible disco crime film, without plot, intrigue, tension or suspense and which often serves as an excuse for Depp to parade in all kinds of glitzy outfits. The melancholy and exaggerated voiceover clashes with what we see on the screen (the first forty minutes consist almost exclusively of pool fun) and somewhere I was gloating cynically about the failed ambitions of this work. Jedoch, can I somehow appreciate the friendly atmosphere and the fact that Ted Demme also directed the excellent Life (1999) actually makes sense: just like in that film, he finds an idiosyncratic tone here between folk comedy, crime film and melodrama. Moreover, in today's times where even in the most bland mainstream productions we are thrown around with all kinds of murderous narcos, ruthless siciaros (and, I assume, some of them are good people) it was actually a a relief to see a completely nonviolent cartel film - with a Pablo Escobar as a disarming, slightly autistic clown.
