A somewhat old-fashioned rise & fall costume drama about Alfred Redl, a man of humble origins who makes a flying career in the last days of the Habsburg army. He is promoted to head of the Empire's espionage division. At that time, origin and ethnic background were much more important than just ambition and enthusiasm. Redl is a patriot and military loyalist, but when he is assigned to work for the manipulative Archduke, political intrigue turns against him. . Political interests are above that. His homosexuality is often referenced, but I didn't feel it was relevant to the movie other than that he had to hide it.

Oberst Redl isn't all that bad, with the costuming and the waltzes, but it still lacks the drama and dialogue that should punctuate the upcoming tragedy for me. For example, the conflict between him and his childhood friend Kubinyi does not come across as strong at all. His involvement as a spy for the Russians also remains unexplained; it mainly seems in the film that he was tricked into a dirty political game
