Raw drama about the attempts of young children to survive in an impoverished and dilapidated red light district of Bombay. Impressive images about the absolute bottom of Indian society. Great acting by the young protagonist Shafiq Syed, but the film seems chaotic (just like the neighborhood in which it is set) and, in my opinion, actually lacks a coherent story. Now looks like some kind of report. Quite intense at times!

Salaam Bombay! is to India what Bunuel's Los Olvidados (1950) is to Mexico and Babenco's Pixote: A Lei do Mais Fraco (1981) for Brazil: a film about street children who have to survive in the greatest misery. It is a shocking portrait; Krishna, later renamed Chaipau, joins a street gang and lives from small street jobs such as selling tea. His new environment includes a brothel where he is attracted to a young girl forced into prostitution, and local drug dealers Chillum (an addict) and his boss Baba.

The semi-documentary with quite a few non-actors is dominant, with sometimes short scenes that only aim to provide an insight into the poorest layers of Indian society. In any case, I had no problem with it. I thought the city atmosphere was depicted particularly well. A busy, chaotic and consuming city... a lot of lives that are busy trying to keep their heads above water, but are therefore not necessarily evil. It grabs the throat enough to give it a narrow 4*, and there is not much hope for improvement at the end of the day...
