Tokyo Vice plot

A young American journalist is sent to Japan to chart the daily activities of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and to delve into Japan's criminal underworld. However, the further he gets into this huge circuit in Tokyo, the more difficult it is to get out of it in one piece. After all, his research results in a confrontation with a big boss from this world. Then he discovers shocking information from the underworld that links the vice squad to the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia. Based on the memoir of the same name by journalist Jake Adelstein, an American journalist who moved from Missouri to Tokyo to help the world learn more about crime in Japan.

In België kunnen de Telenet abonnees het volledige seizoen zien. Normaal kijk ik geen series.. de laatste was The Bridge en dat is toch al erg lang geleden. Deze toch een kans gegeven omdat Michael Mann drijvende kracht is achter Tokyo Vice. Het resultaat is typische neo-noir gebaseerd op echt gebeurde feiten. De personages en de relaties tussen de personages zijn enorm sterk gebracht, en dat is wat het meest boeit. Maar ook de jonge journalist die zijn weg probeert te vinden in een maatschappij met eigen sociale codes maakt het uitermate interessant. Hij valt soms wel eens op zijn bek maar leert eruit. Verder flink wat verhaallijntjes (niet allen even boeiend) die schipperen tussen journalistieke avonturen, yakuza intriges en politie-onderzoek. Hoe meer de serie vorderde, hoe meer het journalistieke op de achtergrond begint te raken en Adelstein dieper in de strijd tussen politie en yakuza betrokken wordt. Er moet en zal nog een tweede seizoen komen... het eindigt met nog heel wat open verhaallijnen... en als die er niet komt dien ik klacht in. Zeker een goede serie, maar mist naar mijn mening wat meer actie en wat meer tempo want het schiet allemaal tergend traag op al verveelt het nergens. De laatste aflevering is één van de minste omdat je toch weet dat er geen climax komt.

In Belgium, Telenet subscribers can watch the entire season. Normally I don't watch series.. the last one was The Bridge and that was a long time ago. Gave this one a chance because Michael Mann is the driving force behind Tokyo Vice.

The result is typical neo-noir based on real events. The characters and the relationships between the characters are extremely strong, and that's what captivates the most. But the young journalist who is trying to find his way in a society with its own social codes also makes it extremely interesting. He sometimes falls on his mouth but learns from it. Furthermore, quite a few storylines (not all equally fascinating) that navigate between journalistic adventures, yakuza intrigue and police investigation. The more the series progresses, the more journalism begins to fade into the background and Adelstein becomes more deeply involved in the battle between police and yakuza.

There must and will be a second season... it ends with a lot of open storylines... and if it doesn't come I'll file a complaint. Definitely a good series, but in my opinion it lacks a bit more action and a bit more pace because it all progresses very slowly, although it never gets boring. The last episode is one of the least because you know there will be no climax.

Het kost beginnend misdaadverslaggever Jake Adelstein (een uitstekende Ansel Elgort - Baby Driver) behoorlijk wat moeite om zijn draai te vinden op de redactie van een toonaangevende dagblad van Tokyo. Maar zodra de samenwerking met zowel rechercheurs als de Yakuza - de Japanse maffia - een beetje van de grond komt, volgen de ontwikkelingen elkaar in vlot tempo op. In Tokyo Vice worden veel karakters geïntroduceerd. Dat maakt de eerste twee afleveringen wat rommelig en vraagt wat concentratie. Maar de beloning wacht. Want onderkoeld en ingetogen ontrolt zich een spannend verhaal over loyaliteit, leugens, opoffering en (onmogelijke) vriendschappen. Michael Mann (Miami Vice) regisseert de eerste aflevering en is tevens executive producer. Het scenario van J.T. Rogers is losjes gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van Jake Adelstein. Het levert een frisse serie op die verwant is met journalistiek drama, een maffiathriller en bol staat van Japanse tradities en gebruiken. Aanrader.

It takes novice crime reporter Jake Adelstein (an excellent Ansel Elgort - Baby Driver) quite an effort to find his place in the editorial office of a leading Tokyo daily newspaper. But once cooperation with both detectives and the Yakuza - the Japanese mafia - gets off the ground, developments follow each other at a rapid pace. Many characters are introduced in Tokyo Vice. That makes the first two episodes a bit messy and requires some concentration.

But the reward awaits. Because understated and subdued, an exciting story about loyalty, lies, sacrifice and (impossible) friendships unfolds. Michael Mann (Miami Vice) directs the first episode and is also executive producer. The screenplay by JT Rogers is loosely based on the true story of Jake Adelstein. It results in a fresh series that is related to journalistic drama, a mafia thriller and is full of Japanese traditions and customs. Recommended.
