Interesting. I live in the US, but I had never heard of this lady anyway. But interesting to see how someone sets up an empire from scratch. When I later read her history it is a bit of a shame that there appear to be quite a few historical inconsistencies in it. In particular that the competitor Addie, who was actually called Annie Turnbo Malone, had a lighter skin color and for that reason did not want to work with the main character. Both ladies apparently had the same color in reality and this feels as looking for a racial conflict that wasn't there at all. Biracial people are put in a bit of a bad light and I don't like that at all.

Also the cliché of the cheating husband of the successful businesswoman. No idea whether this really happened, but he only accuses her of having an eye for the case and that's how the miniseries presents her. That feels unfair when I read about her, because she was apparently very socially and politically committed, and the series only marginally addresses that. And for a series about her, strangely enough, there's also very little mention of the product she sold, what exactly it did and why it worked specifically for black hair.

Audiovisually it is quite interesting. A nice choice of music, including current pop music, which works just as well. The editing is also interesting at times. It is a pity that with dialogues both characters are not always in focus at the same time, which is very irritating.

Nice to have seen once, but afterwards I have a bit of a bad aftertaste and that costs points. 2*.

Good mini-series about a woman who achieves success selling hair products. Simply a beautiful, entertaining and true story about the first female self-made millionaire. The series is set over 100 years ago and the modern soundtrack that sometimes comes into play is misplaced and not working. Octavia Spencer does a great job in the title role as the ambitious businesswoman.

Nice “true” story. Was full of admiration for this woman how she went from nothing to a very successful businesswoman. Cheers.

What did bother us about this series is the racist tinge towards “white people”, even half-castes. A large number of films and series have been made in which the white and black problem plays a role. It was always shown that there were good and bad people between both peoples, but in this series the emphasis is placed on the fact that there was only one bad person, that's what I make of it, and that is not right, there is good between all peoples and bad.

Still a series that was worth watching, especially because it is true.
