Nyrkki plot

Helsinki in the 1950s. It is teeming with Finnish, Russian and American spies. The Finnish capital is therefore strategically located, right on the border between the Eastern Bloc and the West. Politics and diplomacy act with velvet gloves, but are not afraid to also throw punches below the belt. In this merciless world, Helena, a young woman with a dark past, tries to find answers to the question of who she really is. She is willing to do anything to find out.

De synopsis hier lijkt het nog wel goed samen te vatten, maar in werkelijkheid is deze serie een warboel tussen hoofd- en bijzaken, zijlijntjes, plotwendingen, persoonlijke vetes en historische onwaarheden, zodat er nauwelijks nog een rode lijn in is te ontdekken. De achtergrond is dat Finland in de jaren veertig van de vorige eeuw twee oorlogen van de Russen hadden verloren, ondanks bittere strijd. Daar betaalden ze een hoge prijs voor: het verlies van de noordelijke ijshaven en ze kregen een Russische marinebasis in de buurt van Helsinki opgedrongen. Over de teruggave van die marinebasis in ruil voor de Finse neutraliteit gaat vooral het eerste seizoen van deze serie. Maar er speelt nog zoveel meer. De acht afleveringen van het tweede seizoen zijn zo mogelijk nog warriger. Daarin gaat het over de strijd tegen een geheim, semi-fascistisch genootschap, over de verkiezing van een nieuwe president, over elkaar in de weg zitten Finse en Amerikaanse spionnen en nog zo het één en ander. Maar het gaat eigenlijk voornamelijk over de leden van een soort Finse veiligheidsdienst, en de duistere afkomst van één van de leden, die poogt te achterhalen wie haar vader en moeder zijn. De ontknoping speelt zich af op Russisch grondgebied. Hallo, bent u daar nog? Dat is knap. Gezien het slot lijkt het er op dat er een derde serie in de maak is.

The synopsis here seems to summarize it well, but in reality this series is a jumble of main and side issues, sidelines, plot twists, personal feuds and historical untruths, so that there is hardly a common thread to be found. The background is that Finland lost two wars to the Russians in the 1940s, despite bitter fighting. They paid a high price for this: the loss of the northern ice port and they were forced to accept a Russian naval base near Helsinki. The first season of this series is mainly about the return of that naval base in exchange for Finnish neutrality. But there is so much more going on.

The eight episodes of the second season are, if possible, even more confusing. They are about the fight against a secret, semi-fascist society, about the election of a new president, about Finnish and American spies getting in each other's way and so on. But it is actually mainly about the members of a kind of Finnish security service, and the dark origins of one of the members, who tries to find out who her father and mother are. The denouement takes place on Russian soil.

Hello, are you still there? That's great. Judging by the ending, it looks like a third series is in the works.
