I had chosen The Keepers as the first documentary series I would watch from start to finish. An unsolved case about a murdered English teacher definitely interested me. Fortunately, that interest has not ebbed away during the viewing.

I thought the documentary was very well put together. At a nice pace, it first paints a clear picture of exactly who Catherine Cesnik was and how much she was loved by her students, and then the focus shifts to the horrific murder. People closest to Cathy, former students, investigators, and suspects are all discussed and each possible explanation is explained in detail, although at one point the series clearly points to one theory as the most plausible. I could totally relate to that. You look in disbelief at how negligent, passive and irresponsible the Catholic Church and the government have often acted in this case.

The Keepers is a very captivating documentary that I can recommend. The subject should appeal to you a bit, but I often watched breathlessly. Each episode ends with a strong cliffhanger that immediately makes you curious about the next episode and the series also almost never sinks in between. I wouldn't mind if they make a second season in a few years, provided enough new information has come to light.

4*

What begins in 'The Keepers' (2017) as a murder mystery surrounding the murder of Sister Cathy gradually becomes a collection of witness accounts about the atrocities at Baltimore's Archbishop Keough High School. Behind the affable smile of Dean Joseph Maskell was a sexual predator who terrorized his pupils with the craziest sexual power games and even involved power holders for favors and services. The strength of this docuseries is how it provides insight into the impact, scope and scale of institutionalized abuse. From the 1970s in which church, institutions and community formed an impenetrable bastion for a generation of abuse victims. The 1990s in which the Catholic Church used smear campaigns and expensive lawyers to prove her right, while pedosexual Joseph Maskell was not suspended from active duty. Until 'our time' when abuse victims manage to find each other via social media to put together individual pieces of the puzzle. 'The Keepers' (2017) gets too often bogged down in sentimental character sketches and American heroism. But this epic makes it painfully tangible how for decades criminal law has been unable to recognize the incomprehensible suffering of these women.

Started 2 x on this series and dropped out 2 x after the first episode(s). I don't understand the high score at all. Maybe because I recently watched The Staircase and was totally obsessed with it the story in this case just doesn't get me anywhere, I just can't get in touch with the nun and most importantly the fact that it's so far back in time... The most disturbing thing is that those who can still tell it when were all younger or the same age as the victims. And continuous focus on those 2 ladies who will never find out what really happened because it goes too far back in time. No sorry a 2 for me.
