The series certainly doesn't get any better. That was noticeable for a while, but the free fall has started with season 5. The clever jokes have run out, what's left is semi-amusing nonsense.

Rick and Morty: Season Five - Review

"Season five finally puts a crucial focus on expanding the canon and developing the two main characters. This makes the episodic stories feel perhaps less comical or well-structured than we're used to from 'Rick and Morty.' really, it fits perfectly with both the growth and changing relationship between Rick and Morty and the consequences it will bring. In this way, while still quite rushed, both the structure and tone of the series visibly change along with its two main characters."

Secretly, this series is really so ingenious; this is what I noticed from that absolutely crushing finale episode. They build fantastically on the characters, the tone gradually changing as Rick and Morty's relationship develops. It explains the declining quality of the previously established episodic character we've seen from the start, simply because Rick's episodic behavior gradually changes due to his relationship with Morty. I can see where they're going with this, and I'll be there until the last season. Certainly the least season and it contains a lot of mistakes in between. But still a big 8.3/10 from me.

My ranking this season:

1. Rickmurai Jack (9.7/10)

2. Mort Dinner Rick Andre (9.3/10)

3. Forgetting Sarick Mortshall (9.0/10)

4. Mortyplicity (9.0/10)

5. Rickternal Friendship of the Spotless Mort (8.5/10)

6. Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular (8.2/10)

7. A Rickconvenient Mort (8.0/10)

8. Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (7.9/10)

9. Amortycan Grickfitti (7.2/10)

10. Rick Dependence Spray (6.9/10)

I kind of missed that this season was already out. That does indicate that the series is leveling off; the new has worn off and it doesn't feel as original anymore. The first two episodes are very strong, the third is a bit less, the fourth is the absolute low point of the season. Particularly bad. The next three episodes and the penultimate episode are fair to good. But I also agree that sometimes an episode is ended a little too easily, by means of a deus-ex machina for example.

It is clear that this is again a mainly episodic season. Only in the last eighth episode is the main line picked up again, followed by a smashing performance by Evil Morty in the last episode. That big line could be a bit more. But what also feels a bit uncomfortable is that people seem to find a lot of inspiration from parodies, especially from mecha-anime, samurai-anime and Hellraiser. Parody has always been part of this series, but this season it feels a bit more prominent. My fear is that at a certain point the series, just like South Park, just starts parodying, for me that was the death knell of South Park.

In the end I will give this season the same as the previous one, but I fear that the decline has set in. 3.5*.
