Lawman plot

"He gave the West justice right up to its neck... then rammed more down its throat."

When a bunch of drunken cowboys from the Bronson Ranch visit the town of Bannock, they leave a trail of destruction and an old man is killed by a stray bullet. Bannock's determined marshal, Jered Maddox, arrives in Sabbath a little later to arrest everyone involved in the old man's death. Sabbath is ruled by the influential rancher Vince Bronson, who wants to buy off the dead man. Maddox, however, accepts no compromise and continues to hunt the culprits. Sabbath's aging marshal Cotton Ryan doesn't help Maddox because he's been recruited by Vince Bronson and wants a quiet old age. It first becomes complex for Maddox, when the people of Sabbath also turn against him and the wife of his old flame Laura Shelby is among the culprits.

Beautiful film with a very strong Burt Lancaster who I have never seen so brilliantly at work. Funnily enough, I had quite the empathy (and even some sympathy) for the ruthless marshal Maddox and his way of doing things. In any case, right after seeing the film, I can't immediately remember a moment when I questioned his doings. At least he does justice to the title of the film and acts according to the law as a so-called lawman should do.

Anyway, the problems that the 'manhunt' started by Maddox entails make this a rather special film. His hard approach is accompanied by the necessary bloodshed and it soon becomes clear that he is not to be trifled with. That is why it is interesting to see how the suspects and the other city residents act. Both the cowardice and the overconfidence that arise from the situation are recognizable and provide fascinating moments.

The unexpected twist towards the end, where Maddox decides to leave everything for what it is after he managed to pack one after the other with conviction,, however, I couldn't quite follow. Let alone that I understood anything about it. I initially thought that she left town to win back his ex-girlfriend, but after her current husband just died without a good reason (I noticed) , for me the only remaining reason for Maddox's sudden departure was that he was scared. However, that seems very unlikely to me and it would be nice if someone could come up with a more plausible explanation of the ending, because the ending of the film is often praised, and a possible clarification from me could therefore just put a positive spin on the already not so negative review.

Fascinating western takes on a different meaning for every generation. Burt Lancaster is perfectly cast as Bannock, the marshal determined to track down the men responsible for a late-night drunk shooting that left an old man dead. The leader of the group responsible is Vincent Bronson [Lee J Cobb], a respected and powerful man whose wealth is the lifeblood of the village where Bannock begins his search for the perpetrators. They are not going to let themselves be taken in just like that and the villagers also turn against Bannock. Will Bannock accomplish his mission or is there room for compromise?
In 2018, you could explain this western as a metaphor for the impossible fight against the billionaires on whom hundreds of people are financially dependent. Robert Ryan is excellent as the sheriff who tries to make Bannock see the impossibility of his mission and Lee J Cobb stands out positively in a surprisingly mild, meditative role as the man who desperately (but in vain) stays hope for a compromise. The finale received quite a bit of criticism and it may not follow the conventions of the classic western, but that does not detract from the effect. An intelligent, captivating western.

Good western in which Lancaster is well cast as an uncompromising Marshall, the action is fairly limited but when it is used it is immediately impressive.

Also the rest of the cast are doing great Ryan, Lee j cobb etc are all doing great.

A bit more of a psychological western but well told.
