Duel in the Sun plot

"Emotions . . . As Violent As The Wind-Swept Prairie !"

Scott Chavez, the father of half-breed Pearl Chavez, kills his wife and her partner after catching them in the act of adultery and is sentenced to death. Pearl travels to a relative's ranch in Texas and is welcomed by her aunt Laura Belle McCanles and her oldest son Jesse, who is a lawyer. Pearl then also meets Jackson McCanles, the ranch owner. Then Pearl meets the vivacious Lewton "Lewt" McCanles, the youngest son of Laura Belle and Jackson. Jesse and Lewt fall in love with Pearl and she can't decide between the two brothers. Due to a conflict with the railroad representatives, the bond between Jackson and his eldest son Jesse is severed and Lewt is wanted by the sheriff because of attacks on the advancing railroad.

A ridiculous film, but so over-the-top that it never gets boring and never annoying. The problem with the film is David O Selznick, who was determined to surpass his success with "Gone With The Wind" in every way. He did not allow anything or anyone to discourage him, which led to major problems because Selznick became increasingly involved in directing. He also wrote the screenplay and we can now only guess what the film would have been like if he had also left that job to Ben Hecht. Lead actor Gregory Peck vividly remembered how Selznick converted a 19th-century saloon into what Peck called “The Halls of Montezuma.” Of course, nothing like that existed at all, but it does look spectacular. The sex is also very strong in the scenes between macho man Lewt [Gregory Peck] and half-breed Pearl [Jennifer Jones], who is actually destined to marry Lewt's respectable brother Jesse [Joseph Cotton]. “Lust In The Dust” is a fitting – and overused – nickname for this film. The finale is downright bizarre, but the film is so grand and spectacular that I can watch it with fascination from start to finish.

Reasonable film in which a young woman comes to live with her family after her father has been sentenced to death. A fairly simple story that is also compellingly told here and there (especially because it all looks good). Of the cast with quite a few well-known names, Jennifer Jones stands out, in a quite sexy role for that time. This film cannot be called subtle in any respect. Something that is completely evident during the final, and therefore just under 3.5 stars.

Well, I'm of course not going to call this a good film, but it is fascinating, with all that sex and intrigue and bravado and stubbornness – Dallas is nothing like it. Jennifer Jones is not really a convincing femme fatale, but she doesn't actually play that here either, rather a young woman whose dormant desires can no longer be controlled once they are awakened, and who falls for someone with the looks and charm of a scumbag. Gregory Peck falls may not be called a miracle. Joseph Cotten plays second fiddle here but fortunately doesn't let himself be trampled, partly because of his abilities as an actor and partly because of the backbone of his character, and the rest of the cast circles around it adequately, although I like Sin-Killer Walter Huston had seen it play a somewhat larger role in the plot (but that was undoubtedly difficult in the past). As far as I'm concerned, the textbook example of a guilty pleasure (and actually a kind of East of Eden avant le livre). Beautiful colors and excellent sound on the restored transfer of my French Carlottavod DVD.
Favorite scene: Peck pulling a train rail apart from its seams, then watching approvingly as the train derailed horribly, and then riding away on his faithful four-legged friend while he said "I've been working on the railroad all the live- long day..." sings. Apparently King Vidor begged Selznick to take that scene out of the film, but I'm happy with it. According to biography Lynn Haney, Peck never worried about his popularity following this scene or the role of Lewt, and history has more than proven him right. (Oh yes, and another nice quote about Jennifer Jones' over-acting. Film critic Shirley O'Hara: "how that girl wraps herself around every doorway and wall she encounters..." )
