Very interesting film that tries to shed some light on why the USA invaded Iraq in 2003. Especially interesting because the public never really got to know this, which may well be one of the biggest mysteries of the past decade. It is therefore commendable that the makers portray the film as a criticism against the war, but on the other hand it is a pity that they have written a partly fictional plot for it. But hey, it is and remains a film and not a documentary. As long as viewers get the message.

Actually, Green Zone is not a war film at all. I didn't know what to expect, so I counted on a simple action movie, but was still 'cheated'. Green Zone is much more of a thriller set in Iraq, and that is a combination that works very nicely. Even if you know how the fork is in the stem, it is still interesting to watch how the story unfolds. Perhaps the fictional plot is a bonus in that regard.

I'm also glad that the film is straight forward. No terrible love plot in between, no exaggerated American ending and standard clichés (OK, a few then, like the female journalist). No, it's just a great movie. I thought the camera worked fine myself, only in a few scenes I thought the shaking was too exaggerated, but otherwise it was fine in line with the film.

Nice for in between!

Any film that shows that The US of A is not the promised land and has a cesspool where it becomes more difficult with the years to manufacture a lid to cover it, has an advantage in my opinion. Fuck those Americans and I'll make sure I sit in the front row and gloat about this. (I am also a fan of Michael Moore) With these films you have the guarantee that it is not a super patriotic film where the American army is praised to heaven and that the "We will prevail" and the "God blesh America" be lavishly scattered around.

That the invasion of Iraq was based on untruths and false / wrong information, will remain an eternal secret. I certainly have no doubt that it was a lucrative operation for some overseas.
I was curious how the Americans would portray this in a Holywoodian way. I expected an open ending where you could actually still doubt whether it actually happened that way. In the end they made a realistic film to the best of their knowledge, where the outcome gives the message "OK we lied a bit, but in the end we saved the country". Hip Hip Hooray.

It was a fast-paced, action-packed war movie starring an excellent Damon, interspersed with political/diplomatic blahblah, and then throwing in another reporter and the pentagon male Poundstone, the former feeling remorseful for her Magellan story. without checking her story, and the second doesn't feel remorse in any way. Terrible cliché.

You could see that the Iraqi who, how come, Freddy, would eventually shoot down the wanted General Al Rawi, was seen coming from miles away.

All in all, a nicely done CNN documentary...

Slightly better than the average Greengrass.

But his level is unfortunately not that high. Ultimately, it is mainly a film that is strongly inferior to similar films, from a Bay of Scott for example. These kinds of films write themselves, with a classic indictment against the US, but with the American individual as a great moral support and savior.

Damon isn't the best choice for this role, but isn't that bad. Less is the action. Greengrass' handheld action should be ideal for a film like this, but he shows it's more than just waving and bumping a camera. It doesn't feel that dynamic in the end, which mainly emphasizes the lower quality of the camera itself.

It's not an annoying film, those urban war zones usually provide nice action scenes, but it's not really startling either. Felt like I'd seen it all before and better, some decent filler that won't stick around for too long.
