He is only very poorly endowed here, this in my eyes top film. The film builds up quite slowly, but it can't be called boring. The story and the characters are slowly revealed, after which an exciting film unfolds with various dramatic events.

It is a bit strange to see the blue-eyed Newman as a Jew, but well, if you put the movie star Newman out of the picture, you can actually only call him very convincing. What a slick gentleman he is at times in this film, no wonder that the beautiful Eva Marie Saint eventually falls head over heels for him, although their love is more difficult than it seems at first.

In any case, the entire cast is convincing. The remote children's camp may be a bit fairytale-like and idyllic, but that oasis of peace also turns out not to be a very safe haven.

Beautiful raw role by Sal Mineo, by the way, made for him like a glove. He has a real rat face, but he still knows how to endear you time and time again. Actually quite a great actor.

Newman's monologue at the end is a bit put on, but it is very moving and a worthy ending of over 200 very fascinating minutes.

Otto Preminger's films are a bit under-watched here on Moviemeter, and for Anatomy of a Murder and Exodus that's a shame, because these are pieces of cinema of Viennese class

This film also contains wonderfully sunny images, ideal summer film But make no mistake, it is certainly not a light-hearted film, although fortunately there are light-hearted moments Go see/buy/rent that!

The transience.

Exodus, both the book and the film, have - recognized by proponents and opponents of its Zionist or non-Zionist content - had an enormous impact on the formation of the State of Israel by influencing American opinion. In the list of Preminger, but also Newman and Saint, I think quite easily that this will be the film with the most impact and the most controversy. We might forget that a bit easily because it is already an 'old' film and that controversy has long since blown over...

The story, like the book of Uris, uses a number of historical elements that frame a fictional story. In other words, it didn't actually happen, but it looks like something that might have happened - for example, there really was a ship called Exodus, but it turned out a bit differently. The approach in this form does provide a smooth and slick narrative, but it also leaves plenty of room for criticism - and that could well be justified, depending on which party in the conflict you identify with and which stories and facts you accept . If you step over that or if you don't have any emotion with it, it's a beautiful and compelling epic, full of the tragedy and optimistic idealism of the 1950s and 1960s.

Aside from the controversy, that is the film's strong point, and as a result of which the absurdly long running time seems to be over in an instant. Just like the book, by the way, I read it in one go at the time (well, in 1980 or so). And although the entire cast is perfect in their role and is also perfectly cast for it, they are mainly in function of it. Not an actor's film, but an epic - as a genre that seems to have almost completely disappeared.

A bit of a shame, and afterwards I sat and pondered for a while whether the film industry had actually made any progress in the past 50 or 60 years. Not an easy question to answer.

Good film about a Jewish man who ensures that a group of Jews manage to reach Palestine. The film is set after World War II. Largely set up (both in terms of content and visually). Good dialogues, but ultimately quite long (some parts really could have been a lot shorter).
