"I'm going to smoke everyone involved in this op and then I'm going to find Bin Laden."

Zero Dark Thirty is a powerful, sometimes brutal, but above all exciting film about the search for Osama Bin Laden. Kathryn Bigelow's directing is meticulous and every detail or person that may be important is meticulously discussed. The film begins with a torture and ends with the SEALS attack on Bin Laden's hideout, but in between Bigelow chooses a quiet build-up with an emphasis on the many procedures and spy work that goes into such a quest. Jessica Chastain is the radiant centerpiece and carries the film effortlessly. She does a good job of portraying Maya, who has been chasing bin Laden her entire adult life, making even her colleagues and superiors at the CIA doubt whether he is still alive. She always runs into a wall of unwillingness and indifference and every time she breaks down this wall brick by brick. And Chastain plays it all with a mix of toughness, perseverance and cleverness and convinces in every scene. The torture is horrific, but Bigelow also reveals the moral dilemmas these people face and the doubts about its usefulness. She leaves that open to her own interpretation and that is a good choice. Although you know the ending, the last part is very exciting and you are on the edge of your seat. Besides Chastain, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Mark Strong and James Gandolfini are also very strong. The appropriate and atmospheric music that emanates a certain threat completes it.

Zero Dark Thirty is a detailed and intriguing portrait of the search for Bin Laden. The beautiful final scenes with Maya leaves a lot to be desired whether this was all worth it and whether Maya got any satisfaction out of it. A conscious choice that once again shows how thorough Bigelow has gone to work.

Behind the scenes of the greatest terrorist hunt of the 21st century. A film that came out a year after the death of Osama Bin Laden and was even more topical than it is today because of the years of attacks and terrorism. After the 9/11 attack, America responded with retaliation in the Middle East. And the search for the perpetrators of the attacks began. In doing so, the line became blurred between revenge and rational justice. Strengthened by frustrations because the search is not running smoothly and new attacks. Zero Dark Thirty maps that out. Along with internal tensions within the CIA about the right way to go about things.

After all, Kathryn Bigelow and scriptwriter Mark Boal have managed to produce a film that dances on the tightrope between sensationalism, justice, patriotism, indictment of the system and the correct facts (if known). That's why it's so nice to see how Jessica Chastain's character is central. Her drive, her great knowledge on the field towards the people from the home front with other people in the same seats over the years, the decisions that have to be made on the basis of very limited evidence, the joy of puzzle pieces that fit together, ... And that beautifully mapped out both visually and with appropriate music.
