Nice design, poor execution.

The Toll is certainly exemplary for a lot of other thriller films, because it completely skips unnecessary introduction or background. Just an awkward guy and a paranoid woman here. Such a simple setup is everything a thin thriller needs. The elaboration may leave much to be desired, but all in all it makes for a not bad viewing experience.

What the film especially lacks is some extra effort, because director Nader does very little in terms of decoration. Such a "path to the detour" could of course have been very exciting, but here it is just a literal forest path. Nader also takes little time to build up tension. There are some faint frightening moments in between, but that is also all the effort that is made to build tension.

The acting isn't bad. I thought Topplin was a bit stronger than Hayes, but they exactly meet the expectations of a simple genre film like this. The story is also quite nice and the whole is mysterious enough. A dark forest in the middle of the night is of course also ideally chosen for a film like this. I could quite appreciate the ending, although that is of course up to the viewer himself.

The film lacks some extras, as I mentioned earlier. As a result, the film can never really transcend itself, because it is just not exciting or interesting enough to remain atmospheric for the entire duration. Perhaps these are budgetary constraints, but it is precisely then that you can (and must) improvise creatively as a director. That creativity is something The Toll really needs, but doesn't have.

It could have been good, but unfortunately, like many horrors, that was not the case, weak effect....
