“Sometimes bad things happen to good people.”

Exciting film that unfortunately becomes increasingly unbelievable and changes from a psychological thriller into a standard cat and mouse game. The film relies on the chilling atmosphere and the interplay between McAdams and Murphy and fortunately the film scores more than enough on both parts.

The claustrophobic atmosphere you can create on an airplane is food for a thrilling film, and when you add the excellent work of McAdams and Murphy to that, you get a thrilling thriller that will keep you captivated, especially when the plane is in the air. Leave that to Craven. The film has a short running time which also helps, because the story is very thin. When the film moves outside the plane, things go wrong. That cat and mouse game is quite exciting, but the number of unbelievable plot twists is too great. Fortunately, McAdams and Murphy continue to act strong, which makes you want to condone it a bit.

I think Wes Craven is quite high as a (horror) director, with iconic titles like Scream to his credit, but this Red Eye wasn't quite it. The problem is that the tension is never really optimal and that the story hangs together with snags. In the beginning I thought the bad guy might still have a clever plan, but that really didn't make sense. Nevertheless, the part in the plane is the best part. The last 15 minutes in the house was a bit too much like Scream, but without the tension or the threat. Luckily Rachel McAdams and especially Cillian Murphy are doing very well. The film doesn't really live on action-packed events, so it's really an actor's film in itself. The acting performances ensure that the film remains easy to watch. Other than that, it's pretty thin. 2.5*.

Wait a minute. You're not stalking me are you?

Just for fun, but what could go wrong with names like McAdams, Murphy and especially Wes Craven? I didn't expect much from it, and it turns out that it's quite nice for once.

As you may know, young lady Lisa gets on the plane with an extremely charming guy who suddenly turns out to be a neighbor from hell. And Murphy is quite good in that initial phase as the endearing slicker. If he wasn't already harassed for his role as Tommy Shelby, this one would be a close second, with that androgynous head of his. Obviously a grand scheme, just as impressive is the VIP's security and control. What was his title or work? Probably missed. McAdams is of course very nice to the eye and the whole exudes a pleasant fluency.

One major point of criticism concerns the plot. Because what nonsense to come up with such a difficult plan with someone with authority that you have to take hostage so that the VIP can be transferred to a certain room so that they can shoot it from the outside with a whopper of a rocket launcher. What if Lisa cancels at the last minute? Or is there an internet/telephone malfunction? Or is the room in question suddenly booked? If you already have a rocket launcher at your disposal that can take down a building, why not ambush the procession or grab the appropriate car upon arrival when the target disembarks? Why so hard I wonder.

Well, of course the film does not aim to be realistic but to create suspense and the film succeeds in that and that is why Red Eye can be called a nice seat for once, partly due to an at times and the late excellent Murphy.
